Good, but with caveats. The recent update has some welcome UI/usability improvements. Probably best played as an "adjunct" to playing the actual board game with friends (or perhaps multiplayer with the app, which I haven't done yet.) because the AI simply isn't good enough to challenge a competent human player. But it's not bad for experimenting, trying out new strategies, using the game mechanics, etc., and it's better than playing solitaire. It's extremely unlikely that the AI will be a threat to win, but the AI players at least can get in your way, use espionage, etc., so it's not a total cakewalk. UPDATE: Newer versions have an "AI2" setting that's significantly better than AI1. It still isn't a serious challenge for an experienced player, but it's semi competent and can surprise you. AI2 will usually at least build a bomb or two before you win.
A definite buy A little shaky when it first came out but the v3 update has brought this game to the front of game list to play. I wish more sites would review it again as I think people were turned off by the negative reviews when it first came out but it's a MUCH improved game now and has that "just one more turn" feel to it. Love it.
I'm a huge fan of the board game. And while this does an OK job at recreating that experience, I am so disappointed with the state of its multiplayer. The game requires a constant connection for ALL players. If anyone's device sleeps or they exit the app for any reason, they will disconnect from the game and be unable to rejoin. This is a huge oversight on the developer's part. Multiplayer is the point of board games, and this game can take 30-45 minutes to complete. Instead of allowing for asynchronous gaming like many other board game apps (e.g. Race for the Galaxy), they've decided instead to hobble the game and make it a single player mess. Since the last update was in January of 2016, I assume this game is no longer being worked on. Such a shame that the developers limited the game. It could have been a lot better with the introduction of a genuine multiplayer experience.
Beautiful, slightly flawed by poor AI Very pretty design with a slick UI. As soon as a game is over I'll happily start another. Against the basic AI I always win, right from my first game even though I'd not played the board game. The improved AI2 opponents play better and I win 50/50 which is a more satisfying challenge. My only significant criticism is that after a dozen games the AI still has never attacked another player, even when equipped with 10 fighters and 10 bombers - worse though is that they don't repair damaged buildings. This results in the ludicrous situation of an AI player having lots of damaged buildings but even with 12 workers they choose to build bombers, place a couple of workers on their only remaining buildings then Retrieve leaving 9 workers unused! A minor gripe is the slow speed at which the AI plays. At first I was happy that they played slowly. But after gaining some experience I wish there was an option for the AI just to present a rapid summary of their moves so that my turn comes around more quickly. Currently in a 4 player game I might have to wait a full minute or so between goes. However, it looks fantastic, plays without problems and is a cracking game. I play on a hudl 2.
Awesome. Needs expansions. sometimes its fiddly moving dudes around. love it.
