Great concept of stand alone browser. But it would be more worthy if it included a exceptional tracker blocker like privacy badger along with duckduckgo search engine. Need to work on security a lot as well. Doesent block malicious content neither does it block tracking content. Adding an option of custom UA string would be great.
The only thing DDG has going for it is privacy, but that is an illusion as long as it is American owned and hosted. It uses Bing and other third party sites to gather its results (look at their own policy and see) so the only thing they give you is a search field with worse results than their sources. Startpage can do that with both better privacy and results directly from Google, which is of course light years ahead, and Qwant can do so with both much better privacy and much better search results without using Google and it's European based and owned. Using an American search engine for privacy is like peeing your pants for warmth! It might work but.....
I've switched to Brave browser since it includes ad blocking which DDG does not. I still use this app for the stories though. I have one pretty big gripe about it though - after reading about half a dozen stories I get the top bar burned into my screen. When reading that searchbar needs to hover up out of sight.
It works well but I have a few minor design issues. I would ideally like a few more search engine widget designs. Additionally I would prefer to use it as a search engine but have links open externally after selecting a link, as opposed to the search results opening in either the app or my browser. Honestly only minor changes for a good app though!
On Motorola XOOM ; this worked very well until recently. Now when I begin a search or start to read a story, ddg closes & I am returned to home screen. My problem is not with ddg, but with the Google app store. I read accounts of other ddg users having problems on Android (aka Google) devices recently. By design? I like the privacy very much but want a way to test that. "Trust but verify." Great search engine. However the accompanying stories are too liberal for my conservative bias, so I now skip them and go straight to the search. I am still comparing Duck Duck Go to StartPage.
I could not understand why I use the app and not use duck duck go from browser. Nothing special with the app, except direct search maybe. I've already set Duck duck go as my default search engine in the browser. If it had something extra, then it would have been awesome. And yes I ❤ Duck Duck Go.
- Removes popups encouraging users to set DuckDuckGo as their default search in Chrome and Firefox
- Adds Italian and Nynorsk translations
