I've studied with Duolingo's Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese so far. The Portuguese lesson format is by far my favorite. The Japanese is decent, but I placed past the halfway point when it first assessed me. Sometimes the wording of answers is marked as incorrect, even though it should be a perfectly acceptable response. But all in all it's a great app, albeit the paid version is a bit pricey in my opinion. Definitely useful and great on the go. I don't understand its algorithm for point scoring, but I'm no programmer.

I love this app so much. Obviosuly, it's not as good as having an in petson teachwr, but it still works fine. You can both do this on a computer and on your phone. On the phone it has a setting where you can speek into your phone in whatever language you're learning, and it'll tell you if your pronouncing correctly. So far, I haven't had any issues with it.

Love the app lots and use it for French and Japanese. I really have no dislikes except for the fact that we have to keep going back to strengthen the basics once we've passed them. He's to deal with when I get far enough ahead. I don't mind the ads cause it keeps it free, there's been only few bugs but nothing major. It'd be nice to see it updated and the developers reading the comments more to see what people are wanting. I saw a lot of the same complaints. Over all I love it! And do recommend!!

I've been using the app for already 2 years. Quality of the app does not become better but ad becomes more importune. Now I try to learn Spanish on the base of Russian. There are bugs the developers are not going to fix. For example when I try to continue a lesson after a while all Russian texts become English and tips don't work. Moreover "Strengthen" doesn't work at all. Still not fixed!

Great app, but I think it could use more native-to-foreign translation exercises, as well as more pronunciation exercises. And speaking of pronunciation, the Irish course is seriously bugged. Most of the time there is no voice, and the rest is only in sentences. It's hard to figure out where words begin and end, and there are no single word pronunciations, as in French or German. Sometimes I even get listening exercises with no voice.

Have on pc too so getting on phone. Is so addictive, easy and great way to learn new languages (using it to teach the eight year old). Only thing is, you have to go over and over the very basics when you're reusing them at higher levels which is infuriating. Needs to be a way to keep tjose levels filled while you practice the other stuff... we cant JUST do language learning all day much as we'd love to!!

It is ok at the beginning, but I cannot get past a lesson for weeks now because it does not accepts the typed in answer and it won't get fixed. Please do something. I have reported several times. Aaand after several more weeks of waiting still no change. I cannot progress, no useful update, no answer, so I'm deleting. Sad
It's easy to use and doesn't take much time to learn quickly. I've learned Italian so quickly and touched up on my Spanish. And it's FREE...unless you mind occasional ads, then you will have to pay. There are few ads though. Love this app!
I love this app! Having it set up like a game is genius. I like that it starts immersing you into the language from the beginning with complete sentences. My only gripe is that it doesn't teach the alphabet... At least for swedish it doesn't/hasn't. But other then that I love it 100% 😁
So before the recent up date you would learn through trial and error, this was a good system until they added the hearts. Now when you try to learn a new lesson and get a question wrong that has words that you have never seen before it penalizes you. I belive the app was better without the hearts or it could be improved by adding actual lessons to teach you the new concepts and words without fear of failyour.
Easy to navigate and makes learning a new language fun! Having a voice correctly pronounce words and visuals help greatly. Its achievements and streaks makes you eager to come back every single day. My only complaint is the lack of enough vocabulary for the fluency to go higher than 60%, and that's if your lucky, but it isn't that much of an issue. Overall, an excellent tool and I would definitely recommend to a friend!
I would have given it 5 stars before the recent update... I hate the lives aspect and trying to get us to spend money all the time. The adverts I understand and can deal with but trying to get us to buy things ruins the whole feel of it for me. Other than that I think this app is amazing for learning languages.
Great app to learn the language you want. It fits to your pace in a fun and effective way. I like we can review and try our speaking. I get trouble sometimes with some words that the app does not pronounce because it gets mute...
Im pissed because "keeping a streak" should mean you have to practice daily and not just before noon. Also don't tell me Ive probably forgotten a bunch of old lessons just because I haven't practiced in 3 hours. Also, the voice recognition is so buggy, I get its supposed to pick up us saying the words properly but its a bit too harsh.
I honestly love this app and the community, the comments are sometimes more valuable and fun that the lesson. I can only 'criticise' the app itself, it takes some time to start and switching trough the tabs takes a lot of time. I mean, I like the animations but when in hurry it's kinda annoying. Aside from that the content is absolutely awesome!
I am getting so much practice in spanish, which I have to take fror school, and I'm even picking up french. The lessons are so much fun, and like the goal setting to remind myelf to practice. I just wish I could do a general search to find friends, because I don't know who all is on it.
It was a great app until recently it started to crash very often, many times I had to wait forever for it to load or couldn't even open the app. I had a 62 day streak and then suddenly one day I lost it, even though I practiced properly the day before, and it asked me to spend money to retrieve the streak. I'm not going to spend a dime for a mistake I didn't make, Duolingo.
Thr ads are awful, and it is too expensive to pay for ad free, be better off with Rosetta Stone if you are gonna pay. By itself i doubt you could really learn any language without something to teach you the Grammer rules, you won't know why or how things work. Also it needs to have a list or dictionary of the learned words to look over without having to do a lesson, and for it to explain the grammar and how words work together, like the rules on what words work when.
This app is great for learning basic structures of languages and simple grammar. I've used it for many years, and it has help me a lot in my Spanish learning path. However, the lack of a 'strictly vocabulary' option, made me grow tired of it fairly frequently. Also, it seems that the comments option has recently been removed. So any mistakes that seemed grammatical incorrect but were marked as correct, were usually discussed there. Now, I have to look else where for correct translations. Overall, its a good app, but not the best if you're looking for an accurate and efficient way to study a language. Also, why are English speakers not able to learn some languages? Shouldn't it be possible that any language can be learnt?
Duolingo is the best way I've found to maintain daily language practice. I supplement Duolingo with other resources like Spanish grammar books, Spanish readers, Spanish dictionaries, and Spanish phrase books. Duolingo does a good job of adding additional help with hearing and building Spanish sentences. I'm also happy that the newest update has restored the pronunciations of individual Spanish word tiles when you build a Spanish sentence.
Ok but some grammar rules remain unclear after completing lessons due to the style of teaching. I also hate when you get to sections that have like 8 or 9 lessons in them, it gets soo boring doing adverbs for 9 lessons!! I'd rather have 100 sections with 5 lessons each than 50 sections with 10 lessons each.
I love this apo, it makes learning languages do pleasant. However, there are some minor glitched like sometime the audio of the word is not activated. It would be nice also if you could have explanations about grammar like there are on the website
Agree with another reviewer do not like the changes. Timed challenges are now the norm and are not optional.....we should have the option to strengthen our skills the way we used to. Words are not pronounced when selecting them, which was extremely use to strengthen my pronunciation skills. Please fix these. Edit: Changed back - 5 stars!
The forced time "feature" for practice mode on the Android app is extremely counter-productive to language learning. With only 60 seconds it is very difficult to practice very many words or phrases. Bring back an untimed practice mode and make the timer optional.
it doesn't explain the mechanics of how the language works at all. Just teaches you to translate specific bits and pieces. The Japanese course still needs a lot of tweaking. Also could really do with a feature that slows down the voice reading the text. And notifications when someone replies to your comments on the lesson comment boards. Still great app though. Galaxy s8
Fantastic app which I use (almost) daily. Issue: At present the app allows predictions when using the SwiftKey keyboard. I'd rather this wasn't the case as it relentlessly spoils the challenge of the exercises. 5 stars once fixed!
Haven't taken a Spanish class in 20 years, but I've picked up a lot in just a week. Not great at recognizing over the mic, but you can turn that off. Really great app otherwise!
Pretty fun and helps me keep in practice. Has a few rough spots, like poor voice synthesis (which can be quite frustrating the first time you encounter a new word when the voice horribly mispronounces it) but that's my only real complaint
I like Duolingo and it helps me in learning languages and refreshing my knowledge. However I miss the old achievements and it feels like I wasted my time getting the other missing achevements. The next update should at least combine both the old and new achevements.
I just want my lingots back! 200 lingots were not obtained in one day! I mean, my 200 lingots are worth way more than 725 lousy and cheap gems! Those little lingots used to teach me how good it felt like to make things on my own, and now what, all gone? I understand that the app needs to be funded, but being overly commercialized has prompted me to start seeking a replacement. I hate what Duolingo is like today, and I truly hope you could consider making it the way it used to be.
Most recent update broke the app. I keep getting the same lesson to strengthen, I don't get credit for it, and then I eventually get a blank white screen and I have to exit the app. When I load it back up, I've lost any credit gained. I'm going to lose my 32 day streak. :(
It would be nice to connect it to facebook so you can easily follow your friends! It seems to have the option but it's broken for me (at least). You should add a group chat for the clubs.
I like this app a lot. Its chief shortcoming is that in the Italian exercises where they show a verb, "leggo" the choices will include "read" but not "I read" while "leggiamo" will ALSO include "read" but not "we read." In Romance languages number and person are included in the verb itself.
I am using it for Japanese lessons right now, so that I don't forget what I learned at school completely, and I've noticed some things that didn't completely align with what I already knew in the earlier lessons. Appart from those, the app is excelent and I recomend it to any one looking for a way to either learn or practice a second language.
Love it must download it works great on my tablet and I always have to fight it to work but with this app. No stalls no blackouts no lag. Does have some adds but they don't pop up until after a lesson you can pay to remove those and it is monthly but yeah totally recommend.😁😂😀😁
I would not recommend duoLingo because of their "health" prohibition. During lessons, the app interrupts and does not let you finish. The Web site says this is because you're making too many errors, so they slow you down for better learning. But you can buy "health" and continue. Otherwise, you're kicked off the app for several hours. If I'm going to have to pay for a tutorial app, I'll buy one that I know the cost of ahead of time. "Health" is too much of a problem to ignore.
I used Domingo to learn German as I was moving to Berlin for work. The grammar can get a bit tricky if relying just on what is presented on the app/website, but the discussions attached to each question is a great resource for learning more, and gives a real sense of community. Also, in 3 years of using it, more languages have been added and overall there have been many many improvements. Now I'm trying a smattering of different languages and really enjoying it!
Been using Duolingo since ages now and the interface has changed quite a bit over the years. I love the new design but it's quite laggy. Makes the app terribly slow to respond and annoying to use. Please fix this.
I once gave this app a 5 star rating. Now it's 3. It is a fun app to "game-ify" learning new languages, but in the company's effort to monetize has introduced a slough of new bugs and annoyances. Their attitude towards bug reports all but insinuates it's your fault (go read their FAQ). Interstitial ads are now unavoidable except for subscribers who pay ~$10 a month for the exact same features as the free version.
It's a great app, helped me brush up on my French, Spanish, and work on learning Japanese. The only reason for not giving 5 stars was the lack of Korean. Any chance that's getting uploaded soon?
