The MSP Spelling Piano® app has been developed as an improvement on the initial app, developed in Australia by Griffith University students for 'Miss Emma' in 2014. Since then, the Speech Sound Monsters® have been introduced to the Speech Sound Pics® (SSP) Approach, as 'phonetic symbols for kids' (PhoneticSymbols.com) initially offering her non-verbal students a way to show the phonemes they could hear, and 'manipulatives' for phonemes as an assessment tool.
This resource allows learners to focus on the speech sounds, separate to letters, as letters do not represent speech sounds until in written words. Graphemes are known as Speech Sound Pics® i.e. pictures of speech sounds. You will see the phonetic symbols shown with Speech Sound Monsters® in the Monsters tab.
Even very young children will soon become familiar with their link with the universally recognised IPA symbols, and understand that the way to 'talk on paper' may not always align with the way we speak; exploring the mapping of phonemes to graphemes as 'Speech Sound Pic Detectives' is an adventure! Sound Pics® (graphemes) are shown using Miss Emma's patented technique 'Code Mapping®'- words are displayed using contrasting colours to identify the phoneme to grapheme mapping, which can also make learning to read and spell easier. This resource allows learners to focus on the speech sounds, separate to letters, as letters do not represent speech sounds until in words.
The Speech Sound Pics ® Approach (MSP) offers a fully differentiated and systematic 'speech to print' approach to teaching all learners the phonemic awareness and linguistic phonics skills needed to learn to read and spell using the process known as 'orthographic mapping' as quickly and easily as possible. In the initial stages around 100 high-frequency graphemes are explored within the four MSP Code Levels and skills applied during 'Code Level' reading and writing activities. High-frequency words are incorporated, including those with less regular graphemes, often taught as 'sight words'. SpellingClouds® are organised on the Speech Sound Wall so that all mapping combinations are investigated daily. High-frequency words are also incorporated, including those with less regular graphemes, known as 'exception' words.
