"Arithmetic Tutor - Subtraction" is an Android app that helps grade school students to learn and master the subtraction of whole numbers. The student selects the options for the exercise, such as the number of digits for each operands, whether to enable borrow, and number of problems in each exercise. The app then randomly generates the operands for each problems in the exercise based on the options selected. The student is given the opportunity to solve it, by entering intermediate result such as borrow and difference by simply dragging and dropping digits, and the app will check the answer. If the answer is incorrect, the student can either try again, or ask the app to show where the mistake(s) is/are, or ask the app to show the steps to solve the problem. All instructions are given verbally (i.e. the app talks to the student), with the option of displaying the verbal instructions as text. Unlike a human tutor, this app is infinitely patient, so the student will never feel intimidated. The score for the exercises are recorded, and can be retrieved to find out the student's progress.
The method used in this app employs the technique sometimes called compensating, which is easier to learn than the traditional method of regrouping. The idea is that adding and subtracting the same number will not change the result of the subtraction. But even more important is not doing the subtraction of the borrow immediately, which avoids the cascading effect of borrowing from higher places, as in the problem of (2000-1234). This is similar to addition where the carry is not added to the next place immediately until you are adding the digits for the next place.
This app is not a mindless video game. However, your kid will love it because he/she will have fun using it. And you will see improvements very quickly.

The ETH EduApp assists ETH Zurich students in their student lives and supports interaction during teaching. It displays personal timetables of all courses from myStudies.ethz.ch and provides maps of the ETH for orientation. It allows students to answer clicker questions and view the results. Furthermore lecturers and semester spokespersons can set up channels for student questions and feedback.
The ETH EduApp can also be used as web application. The app was developed and realised through Educational Development and Technology (LET, www.let.ethz.ch) on behalf of the rector. What we offer:
This app consists of 9 lessons; each of them intended to automate a particular calculation skill with column addition and subtraction. Some lessons look simple but they yet are required to understand latter materials.
How to use:
The pupil must correctly answer at least 95% of each lesson in the allowed time. The time allowed for each lesson is determined experimentally and is usually between4 to 9 seconds. This feature may not be altered. The actual readiness is measured for the last 100 results. Once the pupil reaches 95% or more of correct results and the average time is equal or better than required, the lesson readiness becomes 100% and the lesson is marked as completed. At this time the lesson cannot be chosen for practice any more until the user resets the stats for the lesson or does a global stats reset. This way the pupil is not limited by any means and can continue learning anytime. Some pupils will require 200-300 practice problems to complete the lesson and others may require 3000-5000 for the same result. This is fine and nothing to worry about, as it may reflect the type of learner that the pupil is or the amount of initial knowledge on that subject.
Parents or teachers should keep track of the pupil’s stats from time to time. If there are many problems solved (few thousands for example) and the result do not show improvement, this is a sign that the pupil may require additional help. There are tips in Theory section which can help explain key points to the pupil. There are stats for last 10, 50, 100 problems solved and overall stats (calculated from the 95% of the best results). If you see that all stats are nearly the same (i.e. last ones are no better than overall) or worse than the required time or percentage of correct answers, this clearly means the pupil is experiencing difficulty and most likely will not progress without help.
Unfortunately, this app is not a magical way for knowledge to transfer over to the pupil. You won’t get any results just because you have installed it to your device. If you want to achieve excellent results is it advised to solve 200-300 problems a day.

Subtraction Level 1 is the introductory version of a program to teach subtraction.
The program contains:
a] several very basic examples to demonstrate the process of subtracting. These exercises are accessible by menu;
b] subtraction tables – subtracting the numbers: “1”; “2”; “3”, “4”; “5”; “6”; “7”; “8” and “9”. Each of the tables are accessible by menu; are revealed progressively; and will remain on the screen so the user can continue their study until they choose to return to the menu;
c] Tests for each of the tables in the apps;
d] A short mental exercise to test user recall and knowledge – all calculations are randomly generated;
e] Sound – to assist engage younger students or students learning English. Some numbers deliberately contain emphasis to help maintain interest;

d] All learning settings including: school classroom, tutoring sessions, and at home.

For older children and adults we suggest the sister application from Australiabiznet which is sold under the branding of "Mathematicskills". The sister application: does not have sound; contains additional tables [ up to “12”]; and more advanced testing activities.
After using the app for a period of time some users will like to skip directly from the front page of the app to the tables.

How To Use:
Quiet Classroom has been designed to be simple to use, simply move the slider to your chosen volume level, and click the microphone icon to start listening for noise. At the end of your lesson simply click the stop button to stop listening.
Due to the wide range of Android capable devices Quiet Classroom is designed to be configurable to your particular device. For instance, you can control the sensitivity of the microphone in the settings page, and your sensitivity level will be saved.
There are also a choice of three different warning sounds which may be previewed on the settings page.
Players are given a series of progressively harder questions to add up with a time limit of 10 seconds per question. For every correct answer you get 10 points, and your high score is recorded so you can keep track of your progress.
There are also social features allowing you to share your scores with your friends through social networks like Twitter and Facebook.
