About this app

Look up Mandarin Chinese words offline using English, Pinyin or Chinese characters (Hanzi) in a clean, intuitive, yet powerful interface.

Hi, my name is Mark. I've been building the Hanping Chinese apps full-time since 2009 as an independent app developer. This is the old free version (blue icon) of my paid app Hanping Pro (green icon). Purchasing the Pro version helps to support my work and is greatly appreciated. Please note, the Pro version also includes some optional in-app products that are only unlockable with additional purchases.

Main features:

★ Chinese handwriting recognition
★ Hanzi stroke animations (463 free, 376 more available in Pro version and a further 8,735 via in-app purchase)
Audio pronunciation by a native speaker
Homescreen Widgets
Soundboard for practising all single-syllable sounds
★ Over 5,000 example sentences covering over 5,000 different words (English translation available in Pro version only)
★ Word lists: HSK Exam, YCT Exam, Idioms (Chengyu) etc

Cantonese learners: We have a separate app for that: Hanping Cantonese Dictionary

Other features:

Pinyin or Zhuyin (Bopomofo) pronunciation
Simplified and Traditional characters
★ One-tap translation of sentences (if Google Translate app installed). Translation can be stored with starred words
★ Voice recognition
★ Quickly display word in Skritter, Google Translate etc
★ Import/Export vocabulary to/from text files (variety of formats supported)
★ Vertical Zhuyin
★ Works entirely offline!
★ Quick Settings Tile to toggle clipboard monitoring on/off
No ads!

What to expect from the Pro version:

AnkiDroid Flashcards support (bulk export as well as auto-export when a Chinese word is starred/tagged) for studying using Anki flashcards (spaced repetition system)
Backup/Restore starred/tagged Chinese words, notes and history
★ Over 7,000 example sentence translations
★ 376 additional Hanzi Stroke Animations (839 total) - single-character headwords auto-animate. For multi-character headwords, use long-press
★ New History screen grouping items by date. If you prefer the old history style, then you can revert in the Settings screen
★ Stars and custom tags now also show in search results and word popups
★ Support for HSK 3.0 (as well as 2.0) and the ability to import predefined lists as custom tags. For example, this gives you more control over what, if any, HSK tags show next to each headword

The following are not included, but are available via in-app purchase (additional cost):

🔒 8,735 Hanzi stroke animations (in-app purchase at extra cost)
🔒 The superb ABC Chinese-English dictionary with lots of grammar and example sentences (in-app purchase at extra cost)
🔒 English-headword ABC English-Chinese dictionaries (in-app purchase at extra cost)
🔒 Multi-syllable audio of HSK 2.0 (levels 2-6) multi-syllable words by native speaker. Note, this unlocks tone pairs in the Soundboard screen (in-app purchase at extra cost)

Please report any bugs or suggestions to me via e-mail. Most emails I respond to within 12 hours (often 1 hour, sometimes 1 minute!).

Thumbs up; there's no trace of trying to make this a language learning slash dictionary app. It's a dictionary - full stop. The interface is good. I love the stroke orders (though strangely they don't show for all the hàn zì; particularly traditional ones, but it's still fine). I love how it can display traditional & simplified characters side by side. How about including Guăngdōnghùa pronunciations?

Thank you for your review Jack. Have you tried the home screen widget for flashcards? Kind regards, Mark
