Svalbard Energi operates the energy system in Longyearbyen, and is responsible for the production, sales and distribution of electricity and district heating.

The company produces electricity in diesel power plants, and heat through diesel-powered boilers. In addition, heat recovery from the diesel power plant has been installed, which also contributes to heat production. The electricity distribution system consists of 122 km of cable and high-voltage lines and a number of substations. The district heating distribution system mainly consists of 24 km of pipelines, six boiler houses and a number of substations.
