Description

The Electric Game is a fun way to learn or teach basic electronics and electricity. Activities relate green energy to electronic principles. This is not another electronics calculator. Players must apply electrical principles to progress in the quests. Topics on Ohm’s law, electrical power, series circuits, parallel circuits, Kirchhoff’s voltage law, Kirchhoff’s current law are included.

THE BOTTOM LINE TRUTH -- Anyone working in the electrical trades or electronics should be able to apply Ohm’s law, the power formulas, Kirchhoff’s current and Kirchhoff’s voltage laws without cheat sheets and formula calculators. Electrical troubleshooting requires approximating the voltages that should be measured in order to find component failures.

CHALLENGE – Don’t be discouraged if your scores are low on your first time through the quests. Few trained electronics technicians and engineers can finish all five quests with a perfect score the first time through. Failure to read the items carefully or to calculate something other than the requested parameter eventually trips one up. Correct solutions are displayed after errors are detected.

The Electric Game is structured as a quest game. The pitfalls and rewards of the quest game encourage careful attention to the learning tasks. Quest activities are constructed from randomly selected parameters to produce a variety of situations. Quests are different for each user but equal in difficulty. Users may repeat quests to improve scores and build skill in applying electronics principles. Electrical sources are a mix of AC and DC. Green energy sources are presented in some of the activities. Teachers from junior high through first year college can use this app to bring some dull electronics theory to life. STEM education and green energy programs can use the app for the introductory electricity portion of the instruction.

The Electric Game may be used for personal learning. Those who have no prior electricity or electronics training will need to do internet searches to find supplemental instructional materials. Basic electronics textbooks can also be useful. Students engaged in an organized electronics course can use this app to practice circuit analysis skills. The Electric Game is suitable for refreshing concepts that may have been forgotten from prior electrical and electronics training.

The app includes an email feature that can send scores to teachers or trainers. This can be used to report progress by distance education students or trainees.

The Electric Game consists of five quests.

(1) Ohm’s Law Quest – User must answer twelve Ohm’s law questions correctly in a row to complete the quest. If an item is missed the user must start over. Quest scores are calculated by dividing the number of correct items by the number of attempted items times 100. Therefore, the completed quest score may be 100 or much less. Whole number math is used to emphasize method over drudgery.

(2) Power Quest – Users must answer twelve electrical and electronics power questions correctly in a row to complete a quest. Grading is as described under Ohm’s law quest.

(3) Series Quest – Twelve questions must be answered correctly in a row to complete the quest. Grading is as described under Ohm’s law quest. Some items require the use of Kirchhoff’s voltage law for solutions.

(4) Parallel Quest – Twelve questions must be answered correctly in a row to complete the quest. Grading is as described under Ohm’s law quest.

(5) Fuse Quest – A parallel circuit has 3 resistors in parallel. There are five fuses in the circuit. One fuse is blown. The user must determine which fuse is blown using parallel circuit analysis and Kirchhoff’s current law. Twelve items must be answered correctly in a row to complete the quest. This is a challenging electronics troubleshooting activity. Grading is as described under Ohm’s law quest.
