In memory of the student, the teacher, the rebel, the philosopher, the leader, the visionary, the architect, and sadly the late, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia, ...
On 20th August 2012 at 22:40 GMT, a great human being, man, husband, father, and leader of a thankful nation passed away too soon. A man that inspired and changed a nation! A man that taught a nation that no matter the obstacles, greatness was entirely possible! A man that changed the ugly stigma that was long attached to our nation's proud name! A man that dedicated an entire lifetime to the service of the less fortunate! A man that made an entire nation, even a continent believe that the impossible was indeed possible!
He awakened our nation from centuries of deep sleep! He architected the very foundation of its renaissance! He engineered Ethiopia's miraculous economic and social development! He made his fellow countrymen believe they were in charge of their destinies! He instilled an unyielding hope in an entire generation of Ethiopians. He made all of us believe that our homeland was once again destined for greatness.
Former US Ambassador Susan Rice said it best " Meles Zenawi had a world class mind"! It is that "world class mind" that conceived Ethiopia's renewal, lifting millions of Ethiopians out of abject poverty, educating millions of young Ethiopians, and empowering millions more to reclaim their lives. No leader in our nation's 3000 years of history had done more to change the lives of people for the better. No leader had cared more. Ethiopia is on its way to greatness, because he made us believe it is possible. The 31 universities he had built during his rule will undoubtedly leave a positive ripple effect that will stretch across time. The countless Hydroelectric dams, the endless roads, the hospitals and clinics, the schools, the railroads and light rail, the environmental restoration, etc., are monuments of his achievement that will surely stand the test of time. Ethiopia had transformed exponentially more during his 21 years of rule than in all of the last thousand years combined. Though he left us too soon and numb, the master plan he has laid for us will undoubtedly get us to the Promised Land.
We are so proud you were our own. We are so proud you never wavered from the oath and promises of our martyrs. You stayed true to the cause of the people, and delivered beyond our greatest wishes and ambitions. We are so proud to call you our fellow Tigraway, and our fellow Ethiopian! Ethiopia had been blessed to have had you as its leader for 21 years. You were without a doubt, its greatest leader!
R.I.P. Meles Zenawi Asres
