Raster marine charts published by NOAA (USA), LINZ (New Zealand) and Brazil Navy are available to install from within MX Mariner as free, downloadable regions. Once downloaded, each marine chart region is available for use offline. When online, a road map or satellite image map is alternatively available.
UK chart regions are available for the United Kingdom, Ireland and Channel Islands as in-app purchases. Each UK chart region in-app purchase gives you 1 year of free chart updates. UK chart regions in MX Mariner are "derived in part from material obtained from the UK Hydrographic Office".
Please see http://mxmariner.com/charts.html for more details on offline marine chart regions available for download.
MX Mariner is useful for marine navigation featuring a simple heads up display showing speed and course. You have the ability to drop waypoints, record tracks and create routes. Routes can be activated and the heads up display will also show bearing and range to next waypoint below speed and course. All waypoints, tracks and routes can be backed up as GPX files. GPX files can be imported and exported to other programs.
MX Mariner also has configurable units of measure for bearings, position, speed and distance. Bearings in MX Mariner can be shown as true or magnetic. Magnetic bearings use the world magnetic model published National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. Speed and distances can be set to Nautical, Statute or Metric. Position can be set to degrees, degrees-minutes or degrees-minutes-seconds. Navigators can also choose to use their device internal magnetometer or gps course to orientate ship on the marine chart. Optionally, heading and course predictor lines can also be shown on the marine chart. MX Mariner also offers configurable back-light levels suitable for daylight to off-shore night conditions.
* real time positioning (instantly shows vessel's position and course on the chart)
* display of navigational data (position, speed over ground, course over ground)
* distance and bearing calculation
Marine Navigator Lite doesn't come with pre-installed nautical charts. Instead it is able to import BSB/KAP raster navigational charts (see menu->help for instructions). RNC's are available for free at various internet sites:
* http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/index.htm (Suite of NOAA nautical charts that covers the coastal waters of the U.S. and its territories)
* http://www.mar.mil.br/dhn/chm/box-cartas-raster/raster_disponiveis.html (Suite of CHM nautical charts that covers the coastal waters of Brazil and its major rivers)
* http://www.linz.govt.nz/hydro/charts/digital-charts/nzmariner (NZMariner is the product name of New Zealand's Official RNC folio.)
* http://www.openseamap.org (Openseamap charts are based on Openstreetmap data enriched with additional nautical information. The charts cover selected european coastal waters).
If you like Marine Navigator Lite and are looking for enhanced navigational functions check out the full version of MARINE NAVIGATOR.
Usage Instructions: it is highly recommended to download nautical basemap in order to see the maps regardless of detailed map presence. Nautical charts are provided as a map and a special style, to switch style in OsmAnd please use the menu item 'Configure Map' on the map screen.
Nautical Chart is a detailed graphical representation of oceans, seas, coastal areas and rivers.
Nautical Charts are made for people who drive any kind of vehicle on water: from professional sailors to people who rented a boat to make a tour over city canals. The charts can contain various information like sailing routes, navigation lights, dangerous areas, areas where it's allowed or not allowed to sail or dock, etc.
All the professional sailors are obliged to have official nautical charts on their ships. These charts are published by authorized agencies and cost quite some money. Agencies are investing a lot in keeping the charts up to date. They release updates for the charts on regular basis, but because of the fact that reviewing the information and processing the updates takes quite some time the nautical charts are never completely up-to-date.
Nautical charts of OsmAnd are based on the data from OpenSeaMap project. The idea of the project is to build the detailed map by people how actually use it. Every user of the map can contribute by adding changes to it making it more detailed and more accurate.
While OpenSeaMap charts at the moment cannot compete with official nautical charts, they can be used by recreational sailors for orientation or route planning.

The Middle Grand River Heritage Water Trail products were developed and published by MGROW, with assistance from the Michigan State University Institute of Water Research; Tri-County Regional Planning Commission; and the Michigan State University Department of Geography; and funded by the Mid-Michigan Program for Greater Sustainability.
What You Should Know About River Paddling
Direction to Paddle: All of the river trip descriptions and maps describe waterways in a downstream direction. References to “Left” or “Right” refer to the side of the river while facing downstream.
Getting On and Off the River: The current on the Middle Grand is slow unless water levels are high after heavy rains or snowmelt. This makes it easy to launch, paddle upstream against the current, and float back down to your starting point. If you want to avoid paddling against the current, then you will need to “run shuttle” (also called “spotting”) and arrange to have a vehicle waiting to pick you up when you reach your take-out point. Some parts of the Middle Grand are also feasible for a bike shuttle.
Using the Maps to Avoid Hazards: The Middle Grand River has several hazards, primarily dams. These are extremely dangerous and should be portaged by carrying your boat around the obstacle. If the river map in this guidebook shows a red triangle indicating a hazard, do not proceed until you are certain you can do so safely. It is good practice to pull your boat up on shore and “scout” from a point where you have a clear view of the channel ahead.
Water Quality: The Grand River is considered safe for boating according to state water quality standards, except during and shortly following rainstorms. During these periods, direct contact with the river should be avoided.
Have Fun, Stay Safe
Safety is an important concern in all outdoor activities. No map can alert you to every hazard or anticipate the limitations of the trail user. The descriptions of the water trail are not a promise that a particular excursion or place will be safe for your party. When you follow the trail, you assume responsibility for your own safety. Pay attention to traffic, water, road, and trail conditions, weather, terrain, the capabilities of your party, and other factors. Keeping informed on the current conditions and exercising common sense are the keys to a safe, enjoyable outing.
Safe paddling requires preparation, proper equipment, and experience. Canoeing and kayaking can be dangerous. The river creates constantly changing conditions and hazards, such as strainers (brush piles and log jams that allow the river to flow through while holding on to you). Know whether and where hazards and mandatory portages exist. Choose a trip length appropriate for the time available, such as limited daylight in the fall and winter. Dress appropriately for weather and water conditions. Avoid hypothermia, and carry spare dry clothes. River footwear is advised, especially in swift-water sections. Know how to get help in case of an emergency, including escape trails and roads near the river.
How it works
Maps are downloaded on-the-fly or uploaded from your PC in advance. Once the app and maps are loaded to the phone or tablet, cellular network coverage or internet connection is not required for real time GPS navigation.
Although the Memory-Map app is designed to be used as a standalone GPS navigator, best results are achieved when used in conjunction with Memory-Map on your PC (free download) for planning, printing and loading up maps, waypoints and routes to the phone/tablet
Memory-Map includes free access to 1:250,000 scale topographic maps and many other free maps around the world. More detailed maps are available for download and purchase with a free try before you buy, time limited demo option. Available maps include Ordnace Survey, Hema, USGS quads, NOAA, and DeLorme. All maps, including the ones supplied on DVD can be used on your PC and phone. See the help page for details on loading maps to the device from the PC.

"Verdict: The Memory-Map App is a truly excellent, competent product, representing real value for money. It's straightforward to use, with just enough preference settings and options to describe it as customizable. Route-creation and route-following are ridiculously easy to set up, yet provide a tremendous range of route data. You can also import and export GPX files (via email). A really strong product at this price point." Andrew Knight, Yacht Arabella blog
"After buying about 6 navigational applications for my tablet I finally got one that really works the way it should. I now have a handheld version of my sailboat's navigation system. I am very happy with this app and would recommend it to any avid sailor"
"I've tried all the mapping/tracking applications I can find and I rate this best. The 1:25k scale is essential for walkers and the ability to create a route at home or to log it (recording your time & distance etc) as you go along is superb. I like the direction indicator to show where you are heading on the map, the ability to save, describe and name tracks is neat. It's easy to slide the map about from your current position to see where you are heading next, the zooming in and out facility is good. I found it reasonably easy to learn how to use."
"This is not a cheap navigation program, it is a professional tool for viewing raster maps. And for this purpose, it is excellent. For viewing topo maps, this is the best software and hardware combination for the job, this alone was my reason to get an Android tablet, and it was the right decision."
"This is by far the best mapping/GPS app and I've got them all. It's simple to use but has many more user options for points of interest, tracking, routes and maps.
"Love this app. Have wanted a chance to use my Memory-Map maps on my Android phone for ages - less devices to carry, and better maps than on my handheld GPS. Easy to use once you get the hang of it too"
