This app is the result of a transnational cultural project, Simulizi Mijini / Urban Narratives, which had artists, students, researchers and activists looking at urban heritage in Berlin, Germany and in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Between 2015 and 2017, different kinds of information about the cities's histories were collected: stories, photographs, maps. This apps is an attempt to link the two cities through shared memories, and to give an opportunity to explore hidden stories!
Familiar but unofficial narratives from lesser-known areas of Dar and Berlin are to be found in the 'narratives' section.
The 'historical buildings' section focuses on the city centre of Dar es Salaam, presenting the work of artist Sarah Markes, along with texts by Karen Moon. It truly is a city guide, which invites you to dig further into history as you walk in the streets.
The 'archive' section presents a ongoing collection of historical photographs and maps from the two cities' shared histories.
