Review from Dan Kloke
Crashes frequently Usually needs to be stopped and restarted if the screen times out while it's showing pages. Otherwise serviceable but can't be used with non-Google books.
I prefer Google's ecosystem to Amazon, Apple, and Windows. Google Play Books is one of my least favorite aspects, hands down. It takes entirely too long to download books, especially in comparison with movie download time. I've tried using data and Wi-Fi, different locations. Nothing works. It takes so long, I often forget I had books downloading. Much room for improvement.
Wish there was a way to set better lighting controls. If I manually dim it at night (because they're auto dim settings are still too bright), it doesn't automatically reset in the morning and it's nearly impossible to reset because it's too dim to see in the daylight. Free book selection isn't the greatest. But I can usually find something semi entertaining.
It used to be better. The books were shown as nice big thumbnails fitting many books on screen like a bookshelf, now it just displays all my books as a list with tiny thumbnails so I cannot see the covers. A way to organise books onto categories and to be able to rename uploaded books and pdfs would be nice. Apart from these slight niggles the book store just lacks the vast selection that amazon and kindle has to offer. Not bad, but could be better.
For reading books bought on google and that you have uploaded it is very good. But one cannot filter books by language and add I live in a Spanish speaking country it keeps recommending me Spanish books I only want English books for now. Uploaded books have a huge over head in size when download for offline reading on android. Less than 100 MBs adds up to more than 1gigaByte on my phone.
Kindle has a more extensive library but with this app, there's no danger of accidentally buying books when requesting just a free sample. Also like that it zooms in easily when one needs a closer look at images, like maps. Would benefit battery life if the app went to sleep after a couple of minutes inactivity, otherwise, I appreciate this app and hopefully they'll keep increasing the amount of books available.
It's close but it's not keeping up. Went would I buy books from Google when they don't improve their app? Makes me think they're not committed to the service. I love the Drive integration for notes and highlights. But selecting text is cumbersome. And especially so if you're trying to get text over two pages. Resizing the text doesn't work like you would expect. Dictionary definitions get in the way of selection. It's like it's stuck in 2013.
Your library now has shelves for books you haven’t started, those you're currently reading, and those you mark as finished.
