The settings on this app and for Chromecast are insufficient. You should have more control over who can cast to your device (e.g. whether any device but the one that registered the Chromecast can transmit). We should also have the option of hiding devices on our network that we don't intend to use so we don't accidentally cast to them. Otherwise, I enjoy the interface and wide availability of programs to use through Google Home.
I think it's great. Sure there's room for improvement. I've had no issues with my chromecasts. I bought one for the bedroom it works so great with my tablet I went back the next day to buy one for the living room. Watching Netflix this way was far better than through my Blu-ray player. I can easily pick which one to cast to. The picture, connection and controls are basically seamless. I don't have a single complaint. I paid $45 Canadian each and bonus I got $20 play store credit for each chromecast. So in the end they were $25 each. I couldn't be happier with them
Honeywell thermostat control just added. Now Google Home is controlling all the devices I want to use for home control. Perfect! My prior comment: I was very interested in Google Home, and the initial use has been interesting. Overall, pretty good, but I am sort of bummed that Google Home doesn't connect to my Honeywell thermostats, TP Link Smart Plug, nor AcuRite weather station. I use this combination to prevent my pipes from freezing. Also, it can't access my Google Drive. So, Google Home needs some work. Audio is great, though.
My main issue with this app is the potential it has with connecting to the Google Assistant. For instance, I could say "OK Google, turn on my Home" and then have it turn on my TV without a remote. Another big annoying thing is not having the option to play audio through different sources. I would like to play audio through my phone sometimes because I share my living space, and could simply play audio through headphones. This would be AMAZING if the Google team could do this!
Google home is no good for me in India, without support for casting locally stored music files on Chromecast audio. The earlier version of Google cast was much better since it supported local file casting, I don't know what google has gained by removing this very important feature. Hence 2 stars otherwise I would've given full 5
The device (and the app) works correctly if and only if a quality router is used (e.g. no lost packets and stable connection). As this is rarely the case, more robust mechanisms for quickly and automatically re-establishing a connection should be employed. Surprisingly, also no data caching seems to be integrated within the devices. It would be a great product if it was more reliable with low quality routers such as the ones typically rent or given by Internet providers to customers for residential lines.
We're very excited to announce that the Google Cast app is now the Google Home app. We have new features and improvements to make the Google Home app even better!
