Great app when it works. Good integration with gifs, smileys, stickers etc. Really like the special features like changing font and the ability to record and send gif messages. However, I've noticed the app is slow to update at times. I'm getting messages almost an hour later and sometimes stops displaying message notifications. Haven't been able to consistently replicate the issue to determine root cause.
Love it! Especially on my Pixel 2 XL. I would like to have it combo with SMS so I don't have to use messages anymore. Could you guys please make this happen? As a Google Pixel user and my gf as well, we would both just use this all the time if we could set it as default for regular SMS.
The new voice note dictation features as mentioned in the change log isn't working. Tried testing it several times and nothing happens. Understand supposed to be a setting to switch it on which also isn't there. Please fix asap! Allo and duo should be 1 app makes no sense. Some cool features. Needs a quotation feature in messages and also needs ability to choose dark background as well as voice calls. Finally needs to be the default sms messenger for Android otherwise why do we need yet another IM app?
Updating my review. Changed from 4 stars to 3. As a messaging app to communicate with other Allo users - it is really good. But I dropped my review to 3 stars because it still lacks SMS integration. SMS integration is a mission feature that Google seems to have forgotten about. As long as huge population of people do not use Allo and still use SMS as a tool for daily communication and yet Allo does not support it, then Allo is not very useful. Sure, I use Android Messages for SMS communications but I do not want to keep switching back and forth between apps for communication.
PRO: Absolutely Love Allo - it's super easy to use and the assistant is great - I believe integration with many other services and features will become available over the next couple of months, though it's already super useful. The AI adds great value to my chats. CON: I can't use it from my home and work PCs - Allo doesn't seem to have a desktop app or Chrome extension and since my phone isn't always within arm's reach while working on PC, this is a big issue. It does have a Web App but requires scanning a QR code to get going (no notifications either) - so a lower rating for this reason only.
Image compression is way to aggressive. For instance Telegram allows for uncompressed files to be shared, and Messenger caps compression at 4k. If the app offers a way to reduce or eliminate compression when sharing images and videos I would change my review to four stars. If sharing images isn't a primary concern for you then it's a good app. In order to receive 5 stars I'd like to see custom color choices for chats (rather than premade themes), for the app to be a required preinstallation on future android devices, and ideally to incorporate SMS and/or RCS fallback. Of specific importance (in my opinion) to the long term viability of the app are image compression and preinstallation (to drive adoption).
