When I heard they were shifting hangouts to Enterprise use I tried to find an alternative. But Allo and WhatsApp don't have cloud chat and independent desktop programs. I hope Allo will evolve to have all the features of hangouts but WhatsApp was a disappoinment considering how big it is. Bottom line, for my needs Hangouts is still the best!
A performance improvement would be actually supporting SMS. Google's messaging strategy is in complete disarray. Now that SMS support had been removed from Hangouts the app is next to worthless. We used to have a cross platform messaging/SMS/video calling app that needed some tweaks and updates... Instead Google guts it and throws it in the dumpster... Par for the course for Google lately.
After several updates, there is still not a way to delete several conversations at a time. Seriously? Other than that, notifications have been known to lag but it seems to work rather well to video/voice chat. Over all, a decent app.
Bloatware. Too much forced integration, too much of google wanting to see what your saying to whom. text messages through your phone's network are more private. Sideline gives you free 2nd number and total network flexibility.
"Unable to play back voice message" What's up with the Google Voice integration. Getting voicemail transcripts at least but Hangouts can't play messages back? Uninstalled and reinstalled. Lost all my voice and instant messages. Worst Google app!
Appalled at how you treat your users! Bring back SMS support, or add multi device and backup to any of the other messaging products from your "portfolio". I don't care how it would be called and what emojis it will include.
