I used to love Hangouts before all of the changes, ideally I would've liked grouped messaging (hangouts + sms + Google voice) to continue, but I understand that it wasn't working well. As for removing SMS, Google, this is a HUGE mistake. I really hope this isn't an attempt to drive Hangouts users to one of your other failing messaging apps. Consolidation of these protocols is essential for successful adoption... You guys actually, removed SMS, I give 3 stars (was 5) since this is now a decent messaging app that doesn't really bring anything new to the table... Likely going to switch to Slack, since it at least has a nice API, plugin system, and my friends are starting to use it

When I heard they were shifting hangouts to Enterprise use I tried to find an alternative. But Allo and WhatsApp don't have cloud chat and independent desktop programs. I hope Allo will evolve to have all the features of hangouts but WhatsApp was a disappoinment considering how big it is. Bottom line, for my needs Hangouts is still the best!

Just got a message saying Hangouts will no longer be available to send/receive SMS. It's the sole reason for installing it. Just gone from 5 stars to no stars in one foul swoop. Just goes to show how out of touch they are with the Hangout community. Uninstalling from all devices. Can't uninstall and the Hangouts team refuse to tell me how to remove this bloatware. Needs a class action to force Google to stop including unwanted rubbish on our devices.

Edit-still not happy with removal of merged conversations and some changes, but at least app is getting updates and improving in other ways. Do not 'upgrade' to version 11. As you can see from tons of reviews Google is removing features users love. I don't use my carrier # much, but the only way I got my google voice texts in a timely manner was with the conversations merged. Without it, my gv texts are greatly delayed. Edit-Keep removing features (now SMS) and users keep removing stars. You had an app many of us loved that just needed some improvements, now you have several and none of them have what Hangouts used to have in one.

I have to use the crappy SMS messaging app on my phone. Thanks Google now I have to use hangouts to talk to friends and then the crappy SMS app on my phone for parents and other friends. Got me real exited for it. Yay! 😠😬😡 not actually happy about that. If I still use hangouts I will have to try to get my family to download a whole app which is sad because they are only iPhone. My friends have to do the same. Its not fair. Stop doing this please!!!

Voice calls doesn't show which direction is answer and decline until after you touch the screen. That's terrible UI that a freshman would catch. Separates my conversation into multiple threads even though it's the same contact and account. It keeps trying to force me to use Google voice.

I used to use hangouts often, not so much anymore. Just decided to leave a review saying I finally figured out why my gmail always said I have 1 new message for over 2 years. Apparently there was a Hangouts message notification email that would not show up in the gmail app from back on may 31, 2015. I finally got annoyed enough to go looking on my pc. Why wouldn't that email notification ever show up on my mobile devices?

Since removing the ability to use this app for default SMS, links no longer work. Clicking on a phone number is now useless. I don't use any other app and I don't have a traditional mobile carrier, so their other Messenger app is not relevant to me. Also, voicemails never load until you close the app and try again.

App was working just fine until recently. Now when I make international phone calls(greece) it keeps calling the wrong number although the screen shows the right one! Keeps happening almost every day not sure what the issue is.

Used to love this app but it doesn't work anymore. Won't notify me when I get messages until I open the app. Then it takes a while to load them all. So now I will hours days without seeing that I have like 30 messages from everyone. Also, sometimes there's a huge delay on sending messages... Like... Hours. What gives?

Seriously? Getting rid of merged conversations and now sms? Why are you making this app useless? I want everything in one place, I shouldn't have to jump back and forth between 3 apps to do that. This used to be a 5 star app, now it's a shame that I can't rate it a zero.

Was a great app when it handled all your messaging needs. However, Hangouts as a social service in of itself is mediocre. With the need for multiple apps with the removal of sms there's little reason to keep using Hangouts as a simple messaging solution, with much better options out there

After each update from Google Play app shows tons of notifications about calls, which were already finished from desktop long time ago. Moreover, to mark "ongoing" (not actually) calls as "finished" - need only enter each "unread conversation" apart. It's significant bug.

Hangouts was what ALLO should have been. Text, call and stay connected. It's dumb Google isn't fixing Allo's lack of SMS compatibility. Unless they do that, Allo is going to remain a failed project. BTW, I heard Google is intentionally screwing up Hangouts to flush us out to try ALLO. Screw you, Google! GET US SMS INTEGRATION on Allo, you retards!! And have it preinstalled on Android Nougat+ updates for ALL devices regardless of OEM divisions. Give the users an incentive to use it or atleast build a unified messaging app that powers droids across the planet in unison!

Google has to solve promptly the complicated status of messaging apps. It is the largest issue that Google has failed to deliver. Allo, Messenger, Hangouts are sorted out and integrated while making sure gmail users and Google Voice users have the best and seamless experience. There are so much confusions. Getting late but not too late to move. Otherwise, they all become irrelevant soon. That would significantly hurt the whole Google community. As always said, the only one single best service can survive on Internet. All others will go.

Taking out SMS is silly. I really don't like using 2 separate apps just for messaging. Anybody know of an app that merges them again? I use hangouts almost exclusively, but still need SMS.

For the past week every time I try to load Hangouts I get an error message which says "Unfortunately Hangouts has stopped". Then when I click okay, it goes back to the previous screen. That error message appears twice and sometimes four times. I've tried a dozen different ways to fix it, cleared cache, cleared data, stopped app, deleted app, rebooted phone, reinstalled App. Nothing works. I also deleted apps that I recently installed and others that I haven't used in a long time. All the other apps on this phone seem to be working. I've also been getting random reboots recently period I thought this might be due to firmware upgrades comma might be unrelated or maybe related. Skype works fine.

Way to kill your Swiss knife messenger Google. With no sms integration it's really inconvenient to keep Hangouts for the few benefits it offers vs other popular messengers that do offer this integration. I'm not talking about the invasive Allo or Facebook messenger

A huge pain Hangouts doesn't allow you to delete individual messages. I REALLY hate that part of the app. It makes it frustrating to read previous texts without scrolling through a huge conversation. I would like this to be fixed possibly with an upcoming update. Thanks.

I used to love this app. Then Google decided to remove SMS support - and worse, nag you about it. Now, they're forcing updates so I can't even use an old version. Absolutely ridiculous. This is probably the only review I've ever left for an app. Shame on you Google.

Very sad to hear that SMS functionality is being pulled. Using Fi I have a bit more time I guess, but texting from any Hangouts instance was a major selling point of the service. Five stars until I can't use that feature anymore! It's great for now....

Why oh why didn't Google develop this app? I was so excited when they finally integrated everything, including Google Voice, into this app. It could have been an all-in-one messaging app that blew competitors out of the water, but because Google's developers apparently have an attention span of a few weeks, it started being dismantled not long after it was getting good. Now we have a dizzying "fire-the-development-person-who-did-this" fragmented messaging mess on Android that no one understands or wants. Hangouts is clunky and has lost some of its integrations, and is now focused on "enterprise" we're told, whatever that means.

A performance improvement would be actually supporting SMS. Google's messaging strategy is in complete disarray. Now that SMS support had been removed from Hangouts the app is next to worthless. We used to have a cross platform messaging/SMS/video calling app that needed some tweaks and updates... Instead Google guts it and throws it in the dumpster... Par for the course for Google lately.

Instead of adding features to Hangouts, it seems more and more features are being taken away. First they remove the widget for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Literally no excuse for it. Just one day it's gone. And for the record, Messenger still has a widget. Now, they have removed the option to merge conversations. Absolutely stupid and unnecessary. It's as if the "Hangouts team" goes into work everyday saying "what feature should we remove today?" 5/3/17 Now they've removed SMS support entirely. Google, you had a great thing with Hangouts. Why? Why did you destroy it?

Loved Hangouts. Allowed me to send/receive SMS using Google, even if I was in a place with bad cell signal, but on wifi. Now that they dropped SMS, I have to go back to the stock messenger and maybe send a text message if I have signal. Hangouts is hot garbage now. Thanks a lot.

Bugs: No way to turn off automatic url conversion. No way to search through chat logs. (Although you can search with web-based gmail/chat.) Information density decreases when the version number increases.Drawback: (hangouts protocol) No compatibility with gtalk and other xmpp servers, (over legacy gtalk/xmpp) unsecure xmpp s2s connection. No p2p encryption, eg., OTR.Merit: Fully mirrored conversation history in all clients.

Constant "Unable to retrieve voicemail. Please try again" errors on Galaxy S7 Edge (Verizon), despite seeing the transcription. Have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. Worse, because I used it exclusively for voicemails for years, when I try to access thru Verizon's normal voicemail portal, I have hundreds of "new" voicemails to wade thru because I got them previously thru Hangouts. No option to just delete all & start over, I have to listen to and delete each one individually. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Problems with video chats ringing on several devices and continuing to ring after the call is answered. Contact syncing is sketchy at best. Doesn't display photos from phone contacts properly. Etc etc... c'mon Google just make something that competes with iMessage. This isn't even close.

This had been my primary SMS app for years, but it's no longer supported. Very disappointed in the change so I'm no longer using it. I'm not uninstalling in hopes that this changes. I've switched over to Chomp but it's not as good as Hangouts used to be.

CAN NO LONGER RECEIVE CALLS. Notifies you of texts and voicemail hours or days later, if at all. Cannot download voicemail. Absolute trash. Wouldn't use it if I didn't depend on my virtual number. Desperately seeking an alternative...

I used to love this app, back when you had also the sms integrated. My favorite part was the merged conversation with SMS, it wasn't active by default, but you could have it at the you of your finger. Now I have to find another SMS app, none of them as useful and nice as the old Hangouts.

Don't download it. Edit - I don't use this app and i am not even logged in but yet it's showing me as if I was on. I've tried uninstalling it to stop that incorrect status but as it is preloaded in my phone, I can't remove it from good. Waste of space.

I love Hangouts as it is in the current version, but am NOT happy that they're about to remove text messaging. (Found out via a notification in Hangouts.) I have some friends who have opted to use Hangouts chat instead of text messaging, and it is difficult to remember who I need to contact via Google's platform vs texting. If text messaging is removed, I will not continue using Hangouts; I'll be looking for a different app that combines texting and Google's platform. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE KEEP TEXT MESSAGING.

The lack of automatic logout makes use of hangouts in general an annoyance since your friends think you are ignoring them rather than just doing something else. And if you've been left logged in from multiple devices all sorts of odd things happen. No good way to test mics before calling makes this borderline useless.

Hangouts is my go to app. I love the whole concept. But as mentioned before, you are taking away the SMS feature. I always use Hangouts to text everyone in my phone.... Only 3 have Hangouts, so it's going to be a pain to switch from one app to the other when I want to send a message to a Hangouts user and a non-hangouts user.

No SMS anymore!! This really sucks Google. They took this feature out so they can redefine Hangouts as a collaboration app?! Why not just creat a different app instead of killing an existing one. You could name your new collaboration app Google Wave. Oh... That's right, no one would trust it because they know you'll just kill it when you lose interest... Like you're doing with Hangouts and Google voice now, and like you did with Wave a few years back. Boo Google Boo.
