I signed up for a Google Voice number in 2012. I liked the idea of a free permanent phone/sms number regardless of cell provider or location. 5 years later, this is my goto sms app since everybody knows my Google Voice number. I can look back at all the history of the calls and texts since then. I don't know any other app that can do that. So Google knows virtually everything I said via text or wifi call for the last 5 years. Well played, Google...well played.
SMS/MMS? Kind of. No support for text services, like Celly IM? ✔️. Solid UI? Kind of. It needs the new bottom row navigation to be Material Design compliant. VOIP calling? ✔️. Fast navigation? Not anymore. Admin rights in group chats? ✔️Video Calling? Yes, but terrible quality from the mobile app. Animated GIF support? SOME of the time. The app STILL doesn't load links all the time using the Android share feature. STILL!! Come on, Google. 😒
Love the app. Only thing I don't like and I've noticed for a couple months is that it shows ppl currently on there phone, icon is always on next to their name even when said person hasn't been on in hours. It used to only appear when they were using their device or on hangouts app but now it just stays on. Any idea why or if this bug will be fixed?
Very limited app. Main issue for me is that when I have let's say 20 new messages in a group, it will not open up at the first unread message, but rather at the bottom end. Silly.
It'd be nice if the tablet version supported MMS like the phone version does. Like I've been requesting. Nearly every update. For the past year. Probably even cough up those other two stars.
You still can't search your conversation history, not even in the Gmail app. You have to search on the desktop version for this. Hangouts is also still extremely laggy, and contact photos occasionally disappear unless I leave and reenter a conversation. Photos take forever to change to full resolution when viewing them in a conversation. And just like that, Google somehow made it even worse by getting rid of combined SMS conversations, arguably the ONE good feature this garbage had going for it.
