How geocaching works:

See what’s nearby: Use the app’s map to see geocaches near you. Then, select a cache to find!
Navigate to the location: Follow the map, compass, driving or walking directions to get close.
Start searching the area: Look for the hidden cache—they come in all shapes and sizes. Check the hint if you get stuck.
Sign the logbook: Once you find it, sign your username on the cache’s log sheet
Trade SWAG (Optional): Some caches contain trinkets for trade. If you take something, leave something of equal or greater value behind.
Return the cache: Put the cache back in its hiding spot for the next finder and log your find in the app to see your find count increase!

I have used this app for 10 years and never has it ever worked so poorly. I thought updates were supposed to make things better, not progressively worse. Ever since the new update, caches do not appear on the trails map anymore, you have to go to the satellite map first. Also, the map doesn't always track your position and falls behind, you have to go into Google maps to correct this, which makes no sense. this was not an issue until the recent update. Now you can't write maintenance logs.

Subs services are manipulation. As long as it stays this way, it isn't worth it. I had the free version before the subs were available, and enjoyed it enough to buy the app at full price. Swapping to a sub model took the access I paid for away from me to try and force a regular fee. If I can pay for a full version once, I'll upgrade the app and keep playing. With a sub, I'll find the close ones, then unsub and delete the app. I would watch an ad per 1 locked cache. Maybe try that?

Geocaching as a phenomenon is very very cool. It encourages people to interact with their environment and each other in a very physical and personal way, which seems increasingly rare as the world becomes more focused on digital interactions. That's all great. The problem is the app itself. Not that it's poorly laid out, but it restricts features behind the paywall that are free on the geocaching website, like access to certain (most) caches. Luckily, the website is very easy to use as well.
