Nexus Media Importer allows you to stream and transfer music, video, photos and documents from a USB flash drive or card reader connected to your Nexus device (5, 5X, 6, 6P, 7G1, 7G2, 9, 10) or other Android 4.0+ devices with USB Host support.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow(M) bugs that affect NMI:
      1. A few people have reported issues with NMI opening on startup. You can set "Launch Automatically" to "Never" in NMI Settings.
      2. The first release of M had major issues with video playback. It appears Google has fixed these in the latest release.

      Requires the following hardware:
      1. An Android 4.0+ device. Please try the free "Nexus Photo Viewer" first if you do not have a Nexus device. Due to hardware limitations, the Nexus 4 is not supported.
      2. An USB OTG (On-The-Go) cable. Costs range from $1-10 USD, see screenshots for examples.
      3. An USB Flash Drive or USB Card Reader with a flash memory card inserted, see screenshots for examples. Please see the FAQ on our website if you are trying to connect an external hard drive or other device.

IMPORTANT: To use NMI offline, you will have to activate the license by opening it online after installing.

      To use:
-If you are using an card reader, put the flash memory card in the reader first.
-Attach your USB device to the OTG cable.
-Attach the OTG cable to the Nexus or other device.
      -The application should launch automatically.
-The File Manager tab can be used to manage and transfer files.
-Use the Connect screen to determine the viewed device and the destination device for the Copy/Move operations.
-The navigation menu to change between Photos, Videos, Document and the File Manager can be accessed by the three lines in the upper left hand corner.

      Support:
-If you have an issue, you can tap "Homesoft" from the About screen for e-mail support.
-Currently, most USB Mass Storage devices are supported. Due to the mind boggling number of USB devices available it is not 100% If you contact us, we may be able to support your device in a future release. If you have doubts, try the free "Nexus Photo Viewer" first.

      Technical Notes:
-DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT! Rooting may void your device's warranty.
-Hard Drives. It is strongly recommended that you use external power when connecting a hard drive to a tablet. Please see the troubleshooting guide on my web site for more information. Do not connect an unpowered hard drive to a phone!
-This is a media streamer. Media types not natively supported by Android will require third party software. There are many excellent free and paid apps. in the Play market. For example:  "BS Player", "MX Player" and "Dice Player"
-The internal music player only plays formats natively supported by Android. WMA files are not supported, but can be copied locally for use with another player.
-Nexus 10 users it appears the internal Android video player is broken in Android 5.x (Lollipop) please use one of the external players listed above.

Works on Moto X, small limitation. The OTG USB adapter I have also has a micro USB that still allows charging of the phone while in use. Or at least it's supposed to. While this App mounts the USB flash drive and allows data transfer, if does not allow power to flow to the phone through the OTG adapter. So while your flash drive is connected you will not be able to charge your phone even if your OTG cable has a micro USB port for power as well.

It worked on Nexus 6 A simpler UI could have been better. Color combinations not quite good but the app worked like a charm! I am yet to explore large file reading and writing to 64GB OTG dual drive. Also, my 64GB OTG dual pen drive is in FAT32 format. Need to check if NTFS will also work. Thanks to the developer. Struggled for 24 hrs browsing thru forums for info on how to detect the USB 64GB SanDisk on Nexus 6. FYI/R: SanDisk 64GB worked well directly with SanDisk app (squirrel logo!) on Samsung S4 handset.

useful does exactly what it should do. the UI is not the simplest one but the functionality on nexus 7 is quick and i never met any problems while copying files from sd cards.

Stopped working when I updated to Android V6 but solved by reinstalling. Would have given 5 stars but NMI stopped working immediately after I updated my Nexus 7 2013 to Android V6 Marshmallow. It still works OK on my older N7 2012. Update to this comment: I uninstalled and reinstalled NMI on N7 2013 and it now seems to be working fine. Have increased my 4 stars to 5.

NMI The app for photography freaks ! Turn your Nexus 7 into a photo and video viewer... and the rest ! Read Word files off your flash drive. Expand your tablet's memory at will. Interface is nice, mostly intuitive. And the developer answers emails in detail. Full marks, Dustin ! One warning: be very careful with the flimsy micro USB connector on your Nexus. It is very fragile and easily distorts. I have had problems opening files which are due to a faulty connection inside the Nexus. Take the back off and tape the strap lead in place and there are no further problems !

Bad to worse!!!! Don't waste your time or money!!! It seems that every time this worthless piece of sh*t gets an update something gets limited or removed. You can't transfer files now!?!?! Are you f*cking kidding me?!?!? Then what's the point of this app!?!? I'm done with this app and contacting Google for a refund.

There is no limitation to transferring APK files in NMI. I just ran a test and it worked for me. If you are getting an error, it could be Android detecting a malicious APK.

Excellent app! I've been struggling to get music onto my Nexus 6P 128GB for the last two weeks. I bought three different apps and none of them worked. Then someone recommended this one. I'd been burned, so I emailed the developer - and was surprised to see a response within an hour of sending the email. I decided to buy it and - SUCCESS! - my music finally got transferred to my phone. All of it recognized and ready to go. Oh, and on a native 3.0 USB (Type C) it's *fast*. Great app, responsive developer, just works. What's not to love?

Thanks for heads up on the disconnect issue, unfortunately I can't reproduce it. Please contact me via "Email Developer" or tap "Homesoft" from the "About" screen and we can investigate further. FYI: NMI doesn't implement write caching, so as long as you are not writing to the drive, it's safe to disconnect.

Useless app I am repenting the day I invested in this app, 99.9% of the time it asking for licences check which is ridiculous and impractical , I had to reinstall it so many times but problem does not go away, is there any way Mr developer I can fix it, or you too are one of those who usually don't pay attention to feedbacks.

Bit of a learning curve, but works great! While this wasn't intuitive at first, once I figured out how everything worked, I was pleasantly surprised at just how great this app is. The split screen for the File Manager is a great design and makes it really easy to transfer files from my Nexus 6 to the USB drive. Transfers are also quite fast. This is a life saver once you start to run low on memory with the phone.

Let me count the ways this app sucks 1. I paid for it, yet it has (so far) told me several times that "no license verification has been found" 2. Very often does not read content of USB storage - I must constantly stop and start it, which, as most ppl know, isn't good for a flash drive. 3. I tried to move music from my sd drive to flash. All that did was erase 29 songs of mine (Big thank you to the dev for that one). This is a rip off.

Sorry, what you are experiencing is not normal. It sounds like you are having multiple issues. Please contact me via "Email Developer" or tap "Homesoft" from the "About" screen. Generally disconnects do not hurt the flash drive, but if it happens while writing to the drive it can result in corruption or data loss.

Usually flaky behavior is caused by a faulty connector or OTG cable. I would replace that before trying to use an HDD. Newer 1TB or smaller drives work better because they require less power. 2TB drives are not recommend without external power.

My complete apologies to the developer. I totally jumped the gun on my original review. This app works as it should, even with microsd readers. Turns out my 3 microsd readers are either old and run down or just crap. But I tried a new card reader with this app on my nexus 5 and 7 and it works superbly. I use it to view the videos captured on my trail camera on my phone while I'm out in the field when I have no laptop or desktop available. Totally worth the money

It legit works. After trying out many apps that would hopefully be able to transfer files to and from my Sandisk Ultra OTG usb drive (64Gb) to no avail I decided to spare this app a few dollars in taking the risk that it will actually work, AND IT DOES. My unrooted Nexus 5 is now able to access an additional 64Gb without a hitch. This is the app your looking for.

Nexus 6 5.1.1 official has an issue where sometimes during a phone call, the media importer will pop up, saying new device connected, even when there isn't one, cancel your call then crash because its searching for a device. The Nexus 6 has a bug where it's exposing it's cellular radio as a USB device. The easiest work-around is to disable Launch Automatically in the NMI Settings. Unfortunately, the bug appears to be worse in Marshmallow.

I used this with an OTG USB hub to back up photos from an SD card to a USB flash drive while I was on vacation. It worked great! The best part is that it even viewed the RAW files from my Sony cameras and could convert them to JPEG for sharing. Note that it is a pretty low-level piece of software, so you need to be comfortable playing around with device names and local directories and such.

Love it for making backups of photos (especially on Vacation without good wifi) When out of internet (e.g. vacation) it's great to backup (or free up space by moving) your videos, photos. Works great with my Nexus deivces and Pendrives, External USB Drives etc. What I miss, is that since upgrading android triggers also when I connect keyboard&mouse via KVM, so every time I switch on KVM, it pops-up question box "Would you like to use Nexus Media Import" -> Yes, I wanted to send feedback, but app unfortunatelly misses visible "feedback" button.

Im VERY happy that this software is able to seamlessly playback photos and videos even without importing to the internal drive of the projector ( whic i did on other otg mpunter for non root which takes a lot of time copying to and from) . I can now use the full capability of the usb inside the android OS, which is not usable out of the box.
