Earlier this week, independent developers identified a software package from Carrier IQ shipped within a number of Android-based mobile devices. This piece of software was apparently designed to provide metrics to help mobile carriers improve their services, but in some circumstances, the software is not optional and in many cases the users don't know it's there, tracking all interactions with their mobile phone.
Designed to help mobile carriers solve customer-support and infrastructure issues, the application has been discovered to systematically syphon out location data, keystrokes and other aspects of e-mail and SMS conversations.
As Bitdefender values users’ privacy and the right to informed consent, we have developed Bitdefender Carrier IQ, a low-footprint detector that can reveal the presence of the Carrier IQ package on the personal device and, if found, whether it has been enabled by the carrier.
The Bitdefender Carrier IQ finder is merely a diagnostic tool that prompts the user about the presence or absence of the Carrier IQ package. The package is deeply buried in the device firmware, so it can be uninstalled only through special privileges on the smartphone.
Please note that the Bitdefender Carrier IQ finder does not substitute for a mobile antivirus and consequently, will not detect malware. For a fully featured security solution, please install Bitdefender Mobile Security (available on Android Market).

More information on Carrier IQ
While Carrier IQ is said to be designed to help measure performance and user experience, it does not provide an opt-out mechanism for consumers.. The company recently came under fire from security researchers and privacy advocates not just for the data gathered, but also its lack of transparency in the use of such information. In the US, device makers including Sprint, HTC, Samsung, Nokia and RIM are known to be partners, and network operators AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile have admitted to using carrier IQ.
Removal of Carrier IQ
Carrier IQ Detector does not remove carrier IQ software which is embedded deeply within with the handset’s firmware. It functions purely as a detection device. Complete removal of Carrier IQ requires special access privileges and technical knowledge. Side effects of failed self-modification may include compromised security and the inability to receive future firmware updates. If you’re uncomfortable modifying your device, your best course of action is to contact your mobile carrier regarding their use of Carrier IQ software.

Carrier IQ Process Killer will detect and allow you to kill the IQMSD process that runs as part of the overall Carrier IQ logging system. The process will not restart until the next time you reboot your phone. Note that you must have super user installed for this application to terminate the Carrier IQ process as it requires the super user privileges to kill the IQMSD process. For unrooted phones, the app can only detect the presence of the IQMSD process, but can not terminate it.
Note this program does NOT kill all of Carrier IQ. It only stops the IQMSD process that is part of the overall CIQ package. Therefore, other CIQ detectors will still detect the presence of Carrier IQ. Note that it is impossible to completely remove all components of Carrier IQ unless you install a custom ROM and custom Kernel that is free of Carrier IQ.
"Auto Carrier IQ Process Killer" is now available on the Android market. Please search for and purchase this app (for 99 cents) if you want an automatic version of Carrier IQ Process Killer that will kill IQMSD each time your phone is booted.
