About this app

Learning Japanese is a mental game that thrives on challenge and reward. Jalup doesn’t just plop a fun game on top of the language. It engages the brain’s natural urge to solve problems by making learning the language itself the game.

No spoon fed translations. No “choose your answer.” No repetitive memorization. No more boredom disguised as excitement.

Jalup is the ultimate puzzle game. You learn one new sentence with one new word, each building off of the previous sentences and words. The only information clue you are provided with to understand and solve the current sentence puzzle is the new word and your previous, growing knowledge. You alone must arrange all the pieces in your head to make sense of the 9,000+ puzzles.

Each sentence puzzle challenges you with just the right amount of difficulty you need. Each puzzle solved rewards you with confidence and excitement. The sentences get harder, your satisfaction grows, and you’re addicted to a game app that is actually good for you.

Learning a language is mentally, physically and emotionally tolling. Jalup will be there for you from beginning to end, every single step of the way.

I have been using Jalup for almost a year now and I cannot stress enough how much it has improved my Japanese, which I've been trying to learn for 10+ years now. While other apps taunt that you can get fluent, they usually only have beginner level content. With this app, you can go from zero to fluent in the Japanese language. You add up your knowledge like i + 1 with every sentence card you are introduced. Meaning, you learn a new thing with each card, adding up to what you have learned previously. Once you know it, you're already thinking in Japanese instead of relying on translating to your native language. Once you are on Jalup Intermediate, you actually start learning Japanese with Japanese! By the time you are there, all the explanations will be in Japanese you've already learned in the Beginner deck. It's an amazing feeling of achievement when you are learning Japanese with Japanese, but the most important thing is that you are actually being immersed entirely in the language. This is how people quickly learn Japanese while they live in Japan. They are surrounded by the Japanese language all the time. Once you're done with the Beginner deck, you will entirely immersed in Japanese to learn Japanese. Jalup really tries to do what most apps or courses are afraid to do: to have this full immersion experience without the crutches. I may be a bit overexcited to talk about this app, but you would be as well if you have achieved easily with this app what I've been trying to do for more than 10 years. I've seen people complain about the price, and while I certainly agree it's quite the expense, this easily makes up and more for a standard beginner Japanese course. That's just beginner's course, this one instead takes you all the way to the top for the price of a basic course. In the end, the expense was worth the price of admission. I would like to finish with one thing: Jalup stands for "Japanese Level Up". That's exactly what you will accomplish with this app. Give it a chance and take your Japanese to a whole new level of understanding. You too will be raving about it once you get to the Intermediate level. Thank you for creating this app.

I was previously using NEXT (the web version of this app), once I discovered the app I sent an email to Adshap to see about getting my purchases transferred over. He sent me a code to redeem as well as a CSV with instructions on how I could import my progress. It was a pretty painless experience. The app itself is great and I can't wait for some of the extra features to be brought over from the IOS version as well as more decks.

The android version of the Jalup app is far from complete yet as there are still a bunch of missing features compared to the IOS version. The content ported from the original Anki versions however are already up to advanced level and will continue to be worked on until complete. In my opinion, the work that went into the content is absolutely worth the price of the maximum package. Just the card linking feature alone is truly useful and convenient, and you won't really find it anywhere else, especially in things that you can get on the internet for free. The cards are true i+1 learning and a lot of work went into them. Do you need this app/content to be fluent in Japanese? Probably not. People have become fluent in Japanese even before Anki. Will it make reaching that goal much easier than it would otherwise be? Definitely yes.
