About this app

The Cherokee Nation Language Department has developed a groundbreaking searchable dictionary app. This is the first Indigenous dictionary app to integrate advanced technologies for an immersive language learning experience.

Going well beyond the simple translated word list, the App uses advanced technologies to provide assured translations across the Cherokee Syllabary, Practical phonetics, or English, along with the latest language learning tools.

Includes extensive pronunciation support, audio, illustrative sentences, grammar notes, cross-referenced search, links to sources, bios on speakers, and a private AI feature. Fully immersive in the language you select, you can choose to access the App in either the Cherokee or English language.

The App digitises the foundational Durbin Feeling Cherokee-English Dictionary on its 50th Anniversary, a fitting tribute to Durbin Feeling’s decades of commitment to the Cherokee language.

The Bible feature offers extended, immersive listening, allowing learners to hear familiar stories and follow along with the text in Cherokee syllabary and side-by-side English translation to aid comprehension.

FEATURES
- Bilingual immersive experience in the Cherokee and English languages.
- Comprehensive information accessed through advanced search functionality.
- Pronunciation support, including an Interactive Syllabary Chart to learn the sounds of the Cherokee language.
- Learner support that includes share functionality.
- A closed private AI feature that researches only from the Cherokee Nation Language Department's curated knowledge.
- Read and listen to the New Testament in Cherokee — historic syllabary text with word-by-word audio highlighting, phonetic pronunciation, and side-by-side English translation.

Built by Cherokee for Cherokee futures, this app was produced in collaboration with Indigenous developers Kiwa Digital.

Very good, but it's still a work in progress, otherwise I would give it 5 stars. It uses the voice recordings of people who speak Cherokee as their 1st language, so the student hears the correct tonal use and pronunciation, plus complete sentences using the word being learned.I recommend this app for anyone willing and determined to put in the time and effort to start learning the Cherokee language.

Overall, so far I am loving it. So glad something like this now exists. I submitted general feedback from the app about possible dark mode, because I get headaches and eyestrain from white backgrounds. And a possible back button when using the glossary. Those are my only reasoning for the 4 star rating. So far, so good. Keep up the good work.

Absolutely love being able to study my language and know that it's the correct dialect. Grateful to our Nation for putting it out & to our Treasures for recording the proper pronunciation! I hope that eventually interactive learning can be added, I am certain it is a work in progress. Wado!
