About this app

Kia ora! Nau mai, haere mai ki a Whare Kōrero

Welcome to Whare Kōrero, Fire and Emergency New Zealand‘s Māori Cultural Intelligence app.

Whare Kōrero is designed to help the workforce of Fire and Emergency New Zealand on those occasions where an understanding
of, and sensitivity to, Māori rituals, protocol and etiquette are required.

New Zealand is a unique mix of cultures and all of us must be
comfortable with, and respectful of, the different aspects of each culture.
By increasing our knowledge, we can increase our understanding. By
increasing our understanding, we can increase our trust and respect for
each other.

This resource is intended to help us grow this understanding by alleviating
any barriers to participation and building understanding of each
other’s culture and values, which is a gift we can pass on to future
generations.

We’ve included information on te reo Māori (the Māori language), tikanga
(customs), whakataukī (proverbs) and. waiata (songs), to help you
understand more about our unique and shared cultural heritage.
