The only way to successfully learn conversational Vietnamese is by listening to conversations in Vietnamese. This is why the lessons from ‘Learn Vietnamese With Annie’ are based around short conversations. The conversations are fictional, but they all represent authentic spoken Southern-dialect Vietnamese, exactly as you will hear on the streets of Saigon. They also represent the interests, concerns, and conflicts of real people in the modern world. We call it the ‘eavesdropping method’ of language learning. By listening to people express love, hate, amusement, anger, agreement, disagreement, and so on – you will gradually acquire the language to do all these things, too.

Each lesson includes a discussion of the dialogue, wherein our two hosts – one speaking Vietnamese and one English – analyze each line of the conversation, offering explanations and elaborations on key words and structures. There is also a vocabulary review file, which allows you to simultaneously test yourself on the new words while also consolidating your learning. Then there is an exercise page, for further practice and consolidation of the words and structures.

The ‘eavesdropping method’ emulates natural language learning, in that it utilizes massive exposure to language-in-context. A language cannot be learned successfully solely through the analysis of out-of-context linguistic items. This basic fact makes the ‘Learn Vietnamese With Annie’ app the most effective app on the market for learning spoken Vietnamese.

Ratings and reviews

Its a pretty good app but not up to modern standards. for example. if I am watching a lesson, and open a resource, the lesson continues in the background, but if I then close the resource the lesson video restarts. how about open the resource below the video only? As a software project manager, There are many shortfalls in this app that $5,000 and a good developer and UI design would fix. in its current form it appears to be self made or done on the cheap and not worth the subscription price.

The lessons are great, but unfortunately the app's performance is very poor. Often times the videos won't load altogether, sometimes only the dialogue will play while the video screen remains black. It's unfortunate because I know the content is great, it's just not very accessible in it's current state.

Great content and it's great to have Jack who seems to have good linguistic knowledge to guide us through what Annie says. Great to have this southern content as most vietnamese learning content is northern. Some small app related things they could improve.. it would be great to be able to go back and forward through the audio if we missed something or want to hear again like a podcast app. It would also be nice to be able to open the script while also listening to the audio.
