The Active Transport Toolkit has been designed to encourage and support active transport. This initial version focuses on cycling and provides the ability to view cycle friendly routes, record trips and report issues such as objects blocking cycle ways, glass on the road etc.
*** Note that this is a BETA version and may contain bugs and inaccuracies. We welcome your feedback. ***
When the app is first run you will be asked to register your device with the Active Transport Toolkit Server. This process creates an account uniquely linked to your device, the email address of your account and the name and nickname that you enter.
Once an account has been created, you will have the ability to report issues and track your routes. Issues can be photographed and reported in real time and updates are broadcast to all devices running the app. as soon as they're logged. An email reporting the problem can automatically be sent to the relevant authorities (currently during this Beta phase an email is sent to the local cycling group 'Bicycle Nelson Bays' and is then passed on if appropriate). Rather than using mobile data, photographs can be taken and attached to the incident at a later time when wi-fi coverage is available for example.
If tracking is turned on your position is relayed to a server every few seconds. Currently this information is used to record the distance, speed and the routes taken when cycling. This will use mobile data (provided this is turned on) when not connected through wi-fi, however care has been taken to send a minimum amount of data.
By default your position is invisible to other users of the app however this can be changed by selecting 'Visible to Friends' or 'Visible to All'.
NB/ Changing the visibility setting to 'Visible to All' should be used with caution as it potentially enables anybody running the app to see your position in real time. This option is available so that marshals for an event or group leaders on a bike ride for example can let their positions be known.
