About this app

⭐ 4.7 stars from 45,000+ reviews. Trusted by language learners worldwide.

LingQ is the language learning method that gets you fluent — by reading and listening to real content you actually enjoy, not textbook drills or gamified exercises.

Learn Spanish, English, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, and 45+ more languages.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📖 THE LINGQ METHOD — WHY IT WORKS
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

LingQ is built on comprehensible input — the science-backed idea that we acquire language the same way we learned our first language: by understanding meaningful content at our level, not memorizing rules.

Instead of lessons and drills, you immerse yourself in real stories, podcasts, books, and videos. You encounter words in context, look them up instantly, and naturally absorb the language over time. This is language immersion that actually fits into your life.

LingQ was co-founded by Steve Kaufmann, a polyglot who has learned 20+ languages using this exact approach.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🆚 HOW LINGQ IS DIFFERENT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Unlike Duolingo, Babbel, or Rosetta Stone, LingQ doesn't rely on gamification, repetitive drills, or synthetic sentences. Instead:

✅ You learn from REAL content — podcasts, books, YouTube, Netflix
✅ You choose topics you love — sports, history, comedy, true crime
✅ You build vocabulary from context — not flashcard lists
✅ You progress through immersion — not streaks or XP points

If you've plateaued with other language learning apps, LingQ is the next step.

tried the "free trial" and I really like it, theres loads of stories for my level and I feel like I got a lot out of it. HOWEVER, I understand that when my free trial was up I would be charged for a subscription, but it defaulted to the year membership. I noticed a few days before it charged me when I went to check on another subscription. So if you wanna try the free trial, cancel your subscription as soon as you do to avoid forgetting and getting charged $115

Edit: concerns were addressed. Thank you! The new reader introduced some issues for me. The highlighting has always been a little janky, but it's more unreliable after the update. If I try to tap and hold to select it, sometimes it works then, sometimes it doesn't. Sentence highlighting is hit or miss and limits the number of lines of text you can highlight. I also liked to highlight longer passages and translate with the default Android translate feature. I can't get this to work anymore.

We have added back the Translate option when selecting long sentences or parts of the text. Some improvements to tapping on words were also made. Please update. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Unimpressed. The free version with the 20 LingQs when no instructions are provided for telling you that if you tap a word (even a simple word) that it is added to your list is poor. You should provide a training lesson to use the app, then reset the 20. At least I have Babel for life and the DuoLingo subscription can include up to 6 people, even if it's not ideal. This is overpriced for what it is. Paying to listen to Stromae and read the lyrics is silly. I can do that for free.

LingQ does take some getting used to. We offer a New Learner Guide and beginner content to help users get started, but we understand the first experience can be clearer. The 20 free LingQs are meant as a trial of the method before upgrading.

What’s new

• New Languages competition — join a team and climb the leaderboards
• Reader: hyphenated LingQs now highlight; long-sentence translations no longer cut off
• Audio/video: lesson/playlist audio conflict, TTS voices, and flashcard autoplay fixed

• Course Subscribe, sorting, and more stability fixes
