About 20.5 million people depend upon it for their livelihood - close to two-third of rural India. It provides employment to about 8.8 % of the population.
India has a vast livestock resource, which contributes 4.11% to India’s GDP and 25.6% of total Agriculture GDP. Cattle have always played a significant role in sustaining the agriculture system by providing vital inputs like manure and draught power. For a large section of rural India, cattle rearing, providing a steady income, is essential for survival. Farm animals also create a significant number of jobs and small/ancillary business opportunities.
