Planning for a career can seem like an overwhelming and daunting process. But sticking to a few simple career-planning guidelines can help you get through the process more easily.
Planning for your career is one of the most important steps you can take in your life, setting a foundation for how you'll spend a great deal of your life. However, planning for a career isn't always a short-lived process. In fact, for many people, it can be a lifelong process than includes re-defining goals, developing interests, and changing careers.
Still, there''s a basic process to planning for a career, no matter where you are in the overall lifelong process. The process begins with choosing an occupation, progresses to finding a job, then develops with one''s ability to grow into a job.
For many people, choosing an occupation is the hardest part of the process. However, there are many resources available to help you along the way. For example, you might first choose to see a career development professional, who can help guide you through the process of choosing a profession. A counsellor's guidance will be based on answers you provide about yourself, focusing largely on your interests, values, skills, preferred environments, and personal developmental needs. ***** ALL THE BEST *****
What according to you takes to have a great career?
If you work 8 hours a day you spend an average 30% of your life at work. The rest 30 % is spent sleeping. So technically the decision of making a career choice is going to determine how you are going to spend this 30 % of your life. Are you going to live your parents perfect dreams for you or are you going to find the most easy and safe option which will ensure that you work real hard day after day but get a set income every month nevertheless???
You may choose to follow your interest but at any given time a person has more than one interest so which one is the best one to follow…? The answer is easy. The one for which you are most passionate about. How will you know if that’s your passion? Once again the answer is simple. If you are passionate about something your mind will not stop thinking about it.
So now you found your passion…what next… simple follow your passion right? Sadly the answer to this is not so simple.
Larry Smith professor of economics at the University of Waterloo has some simple but truthful answers. Passion is essential for a great career but there’s a difference between essential and sufficient. You may have a passion to become a doctor and serve the people but are you willing to accept the role with all that it offers. The flexible working hours, the whole dealing with the sick and sad people everyday etc etc. If your passion covers all aspects of the job then congratulations you are a step ahead.
The second hurdle is that we are afraid to follow our passion. Why because we are afraid to look dumb, afraid to be obsessive, afraid of greatness. A don’t care attitude is often a safe wall we build around to protect ourselves from accepting and overcoming our fears. So if I want to be a cricketer I will be afraid that my parents might not accept it. It’s too much of a risk; what if I fail…people will laugh on me… so on and so forth. So I will gladly accept my parent’s suggestion and become a banker or engineer. Why? Because it’s safe and I won’t look like a fool obsessed to get into cricket.
Third hurdle is the excuses we give to make ourselves feel better. Ohh but I am not that intelligent, if only I had this…, that person had a lot of luck on him…but I had to take care of my family….the pile of excuses goes on. I am not saying that these problems are not real. But tell me one thing after spending 20 years at a crappy job where you haven’t felt motivated and happy…can you look into the eyes of your partner and child and say it’s because of you guys….Is it going to be any help thinking what you could have achieved but you didn’t for them…?
The courage to follow your passion and willingness to take it with challenges is single most exciting factor you can experience in your career journey. If you’ve never tasted what it’s like to get up in the morning and be pleased to go to work, you don’t know what you’re missing.
