About this app

The unique app for children to learn sign language and promote spoken language. With attractive graphics and intuitive operation, children learn in a playful way.

-------------------------------

WHAT IS MIOLELO?

Olelo is the Hawaiian word for language and mi means “my” in Spanish. miolelo therefore means something like “my language”.

Language, whether sign language or spoken language, is very important for children to be able to communicate. miolelo wants to help children get a good introduction to the language. This is achieved with a small, intuitive world that children can explore in a playful way. Thanks to the appealing graphics and the well-thought-out operating concept, you can learn with ease. The corresponding gesture can be displayed directly for each picture, which enables a memorable assignment. The playful quiz is fun for children and motivates them to keep going. In addition to signs, the children's area can also be completely converted to spoken language in order to train listening comprehension.

In addition, miolelo offers a parent area. Here all signs can be viewed, sorted and filtered in list form. There is also a quiz here to test your learning progress.

miolelo uses signs from German Sign Language (DGS). The aim of the app is to provide children with an easy introduction to sign language. To learn more complex knowledge and to formulate complete sentences, we recommend taking a home sign language course or attending an appropriate school.

WHAT IS FREE TO USE?

All areas can be fully explored. However, the signs are only activated on the playground. All functions (quizzes, switching to listening, ...) can be tried out here.

--------------------------------

CHILDREN'S AREA

- Show gesture: A hand symbol is displayed for each picture. By clicking on the hand symbol, the appropriate gesture is displayed.

- Move: In almost every area it is possible to move left and right with a touch. Have fun exploring.

- Open sub-area: In many places there is a plus symbol that can be used to open a sub-area.

- Leave sub-area: You can leave a sub-area by clicking on the door displayed at the bottom left.

- Start quiz: During the quiz, a sign is shown and you have to find and click on the correct picture.

- Switch on hearing: Listening can also be learned instead of signing. The corresponding word is spoken here. The rest of the operation remains unchanged.

---------------------------------

PARENTS AREA

- Sorting: The list of signs can be sorted according to the alphabet or according to the order in the children's area.

- Favorites: Signs that are currently important can be marked as favorites.

- Search: You can use the search to find signs quickly and easily.

- Quiz: Learning progress can be checked in the quiz. You can filter whether all signs or only signs from individual areas should be queried. You can also choose whether the word is learned as a sign or the sign as a word.

WHY SIGN LANGUAGE?

Children have the need to communicate and want to understand things. If the development of spoken language is missing or delayed, frustration quickly arises. Sign language helps here. This is quick and easy for children to learn and helps them to communicate with their environment. Regardless of whether they are deaf, have a cochlear implant, have a hearing aid, are non-verbal or have delayed speech development (late talkers), sign language is a real enrichment for all children. Even for children with normal hearing and speech development, some parents also use special baby signs because this can be learned more quickly than spoken language.
