About this app

Turn your phone into a virtual time machine.

Explore historical aerial imagery from across the United States and see how landscapes, cities, and neighborhoods have changed through the decades.

HistoricAerials lets you view historical aerial photography and map imagery from multiple decades directly on your mobile device. Instantly compare past and present imagery to understand how land use, development, and property boundaries have evolved over time.

Because HistoricAerials imagery is fully orthorectified, locations shown in the imagery are spatially accurate. You can obtain precise geographic coordinates for features visible in historic imagery, even if those features have disappeared today.

This makes it possible to locate forgotten structures, former industrial sites, abandoned roads, historic homesites, and other lost features directly in the field using GPS.

This powerful research tool is used by:

• Metal detector enthusiasts searching for old homesites, historic schools, and forgotten locations
• Environmental consultants conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments
• Archaeologists researching historical landscapes
• Surveyors and engineers studying land development patterns
• Oil & gas professionals locating historic well sites and legacy infrastructure
• Real estate professionals investigating property history
• Urban planners analyzing land use change

This is still in beta, and I'm already loving it. I use the historic aerials website almost every day, and this makes it so much easier than dealing with the web page on mobile. The split map/comparison feature is awesome!! There are ad banners at the top and bottom of the maps, but nothing randomly pops up. Anyone who experiences pop-ups are probably accidently pressing the ads or needs to clean their screen. I'm looking forward to future versions and updates.

Thank you for the feedback. It’s encouraging to hear the app makes Historic Aerials easier on mobile. Older versions had many more ads, which created a poor experience,so we reduced them. This version only has banner ads at the top and bottom and occasional full-screen ads.Our goal is to balance a good free experience while helping cover hosting costs

it isn't bad. the watermarks are quite a lot there. the view screen is tiny compared with other map apps, but this one usually gives you the best aerials you can get easily. I guess the biggest thing I can say is for them to make the view screen bigger, enough to work on a phone/tablet in portrait mode.

The ads are wretched, especially for active metal detecting. Like I'm out in a field pacing an old feature that is no longer present and you want me to stop, put my equipment down, hit x. I don't think the gps polling is high enough? pretty inaccurate and slow to correct even with a dual band phone. I also don't like the split screen style comparison. Also, the website version (not the app) says I have adblocker on and obscures the entire screen now which is new. I don't have ad blocker btw...

What’s new

We’ve updated the design to improve the overall map experience by consolidating multiple buttons into a single expandable control, allowing users to see more of the map with less screen obstruction and providing a cleaner, more streamlined interface, along with general performance improvements and bug fixes.
