📖 The Book of Isolation and Seclusion by Ibn Abi Al-Dunya 📖

By Abu Bakr ibn Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Sufyan ibn Qais Al-Baghdadi, known as Ibn Abi Al-Dunya

Seclusion has existed since the time of the messages. However, when the messengers and prophets themselves saw their people denying them, persisting in their disbelief, and failing to obey their Lord, they isolated themselves from them and from what they worshipped besides God Almighty. What they had mocked overtook their people, and a humiliating punishment descended upon their court. God Almighty said: "So when he had withdrawn from them and what they worshipped besides God, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each of them We made a prophet." (Maryam: 49) It has been reported from those before us that they became monks, fleeing to the mountains and deserts to escape the temptation of their religion, cutting themselves off from socializing with people, marriage, and procreation.

There are remnants of seclusion in Islamic law, supported by texts and traditions, and also by texts and traditions that contradict it. This led to a dispute between two groups of scholars: those who recommended it in exchange for socializing, and those who recommended socializing rather than isolation. This matter must have a guiding principle, otherwise it would deviate from the bounds of Islamic law. Some righteous people, despairing of their inability to change, may be driven to isolate themselves from the people of falsehood, even if they are relatives. Although they may be able to change the reality of those around them and guide them, it requires some effort and fatigue.

Author:
Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr, Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Sufyan ibn Qays al-Baghdadi al-Qurashi, their client, one of the clients of the Umayyads (208 AH - 281 AH), nicknamed Ibn Abi al-Dunya (his nickname overshadowed his name, to the point that he became known by it). Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr was born in Baghdad in the early third century AH, in the year 208 AH. He was an Arab historian and educator. He taught the Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tadid and his son, al-Muktafi. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir - may God have mercy on him - said of him in Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah: "He is known for his many beneficial, popular, and well-known works on spiritual matters and other topics. He was truthful, a memorizer, and a man of integrity."

❇️ Some reviews of the book "Isolation and Seclusion" by Ibn Abi Al-Dunya ❇️

- The book encourages seclusion in its proper places and appropriate times, such as seeking knowledge to protect the heart from temptations and increase wisdom and knowledge. Wisdom has ten parts, nine of which are in silence and the tenth is in isolating oneself from people. A man said to Sufyan Al-Thawri: "Give me advice." He said: "This is a time of silence and staying home." "Whoever wants to increase his knowledge and magnify his patience should sit in a gathering other than that of his kin."
Jory Abdullah

- The righteous used to advise one another to do three things: to imprison the tongue, to frequently seek forgiveness, and to isolate one another. Isolation and seclusion... Ibn Abi Al-Dunya
Entsar Fadl

- This helped me greatly in accepting and enduring seclusion.

- A book that calls for contemplation in seclusion Isolation, and the individual addresses himself in taking these moments when the hustle and bustle of life increases. The author includes hadiths, sayings, poems, and wisdom that call for seclusion from people and isolation for worship. However, he includes all hadiths, whether authentic, good, or weak.
Sumayyah

- Distinguishes between heretical and legitimate isolation... subtle in meaning... despite containing many weak hadiths and fabricated narratives.
