Wisdom and proverbs hold a prominent place in Arabic literature in general, and Arabic poetry in particular. The late Professor Abdullah Fikri compiled a considerable collection of Arabic proverbs and sayings from various eras. We find proverbs from the pre-Islamic era, the Umayyad era, the Abbasid era, and even some from later periods. He arranged them alphabetically, and they number 1232 proverbs and sayings.
This book is a comprehensive collection of proverbs and sayings, which can be divided into three categories:
- Proverbs and sayings that reflect the social and intellectual life of ancient times.
- Universal proverbs and sayings that are relevant to all times and places and express the suffering of humanity in its struggle for life, civilization, and progress.
- Individual proverbs and sayings that reflect an individual's experiences in dealing with their fellow human beings and their life within their community.
However, all these proverbs, in their three categories, fully reflect public and individual life, the experiences of human societies, and the individuals within these societies.

Abd Allah Fikri "Pasha" ibn Muhammad Baligh ibn Abdullah ibn Muhammad (1250 AH - 1306 AH / 1834 CE - 1889 CE): An Egyptian minister and man of letters. He was a poet. He was born in Mecca, where his father had gone with the army of the governor of Egypt. He grew up in Cairo and studied at Al-Azhar. He served as Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, then as First Secretary of the Chamber of Deputies, and finally as Minister of Education in 1299 AH, resigning after four months. He was accused of participating in the Urabi Revolt, imprisoned, and later acquitted. In 1306 AH (1887/88 CE), he was chosen as head of the Egyptian scientific delegation to the Stockholm Conference. He died in Cairo. Among his books are "Intellectual Benefits," "The Hidden Kingdom," and "A Commentary on Safwat's Badi'iyya," as well as letters and articles.

Youth was light in its days... but old age is a heavy burden upon you.
How many a donkey rides a horse... and how many a horse rides a donkey!
What A bird flew and soared... but just as it flew, it fell.
