It WAS a good browser, or so I thought, until I got to one of Opera's web sites. I had to turn data saving and ad blocking OFF to get rid of a message saying that Opera Mini was not compatible with that site, and that I should use another browser. What an absolutely wonderful way of promoting the browser. As soon as I find another browser that's actually decent, Opera will be off my phone and never again installed on any device I own. I'll also recommend something else to anyone who asks.
Works perfectly as described, and as designed for - ie, a minimalist browser designed to save data for those on limited data tariffs. For those who complain about ads - turn ON the ad blocker, and turn OFF the news feeds. It will then work perfectly. EDIT: still fantastic following the latest update. Big thanks, and seasons greetings to the Opera Mini development team. 👍 🍻
It's a nice fast browser with low data use and that keeps tabs well but I don't trust their ad block and now the browser itself shows full screen ads sometimes when opening. Apparently Opera now needs to reload open tabs of you haven't used them in a while. That never used to be the case. Probably best to find a different browser.
It's a compact browser with a built-in RSS-reader but it won't open a saved HTML file like the stock browser and, now, THIS APP IS REALLY, REALLY STARTING TO SUCK! Ads are now rather frequent and intrusive and they're full-page. With the latest update, it is oftentimes the case that the speed dial displays incompletely. It's definitely time to consider chucking this app!
LAST UPDATE: I'm switching to Firefox and Firefox Quantum. They fight for an open internet and work for the user, not for the profit. I recommend anyone to give it a try ;) UPDATE 2: Now I'm even getting news as notifications and there's no way to opt out. I already removed them from the speed dial, I guess the Chinese owner wants more revenue. UPDATE: Am I seeing adds delivered by the web browser before it loads pages? How is this possible?! I didn't expect this at all. That was not announced anywhere! ORIGINAL POST: This is the best replacement to Google Chrome and it's much faster.
Update 2: as of Dec 8 the scroll bar still does not work. This on a Pixel 2 with Oreo 8.0. Update as of Oct 2017 The Opera mini's scroll bar has stopped working. Phone is now on Oreo. Yesterday, Nougat 7.1.1 dropped to my phone and Opera Mini has not behaved properly since. I'm about to try my next reinstall.
