The capital of Portugal, Lisbon (Portuguese: Lisboa) has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with a contemporary culture that is alive and thriving and making its mark in today's Europe. Perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is one of the rare Western European cities that face the ocean and uses water as an element that defines the city. Lisbon enchants travelers with its white bleached limestone buildings, intimate alleyways, and an easy going charm that makes it a popular year round destination.
Like Istanbul, Amman, Rome, San Francisco and Bergen, Lisbon is built on seven hills.
The sparkling new Lisboa Ask Me Centre (Pç. do Comércio, Tel. +351 (21) 031-2815, open 9AM - 8PM daily) will help you find accommodation and the staff are happy to dispense advice, maps and brochures. Smaller Ask Me Lisboa kiosks are dotted about the Rossio district and airport and their multilingual staff also have maps and brochures.
The Lisboa Card, which can be purchased from tourist information outlets, offers free use of all public transport in the city and free or reduced price tickets to many museums, galleries and tourist attractions. They can be purchased in 24 hour adult €17, 48 hour €27 and 72 hour €33 denominations. They are not very good value unless you plan to visit a lot of museums. Especially so if you are a holder of a student identification card (international or national) since the student discounts to these attractions are often the same as for the Lisboa Card.
The city stretches along the northern bank of the river Tejo as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. As the terrain rises north away from the water, steep streets and stairways form the old tangled neighborhoods or give way to green parks in the western suburbs.
On downtown, the vast Praça do Comércio, facing the river at the base of the pedestrianized grid of Baixa (lower town), occupies a central position. Further northwest from Baixa stretches Lisbon's "Main Street", Avenida da Liberdade, a broad boulevard resplendent in leafy trees, chic hotels and upscale shops, terminating at the circular Praça de Marques de Pombal. To the east are old neighborhoods of Mouraria and Alfama, both relatively spared during the Great Earthquake (as they are on a firmer rock) and therefore both retaining the charm of the winding alleys and azulejo-covered crumbling walls (further north lie relatively boring residential quarters). To the west the hill rises steeply into Bairro Alto (upper town; prepare to trek up, or take one of the elevadores, or funiculars); still further west are rapidly gentrifying former docks of Alcantara, dominated on the western end by the supports of the gigantic new bridge over the river, and the suburbs of Santo Amaro and Belém.

Linha da Gaivota (Seagull line): Colégio Militar/Luz - Campo Grande via Alameda
Linha do Girassol (Sunflower line): Rotunda - Campo Grande
In 1998, coinciding with the Lisbon Expo98, the first stage of the metro extension project was finished. In Dec 2008, the system has four lines with a total length of 40 km long (47 stations, of which 4 are transfer stations):
Metro Lisboa decorates all stations with some artistic elements (see official page below) which is especially visible on the new Oriente Line (mainly interesting Olaias, Chelas and Oriente stations). Older stations are of a very simple design with small wall decorations.
Blue Line - Linha da Gaivota (14km - 17 stations) extension north from Colégio Militar/Luz to Pontinha (2 stations) opened Oct. 1997 and after splitting the line in the city centre it runs from Restauradores via Baixa-Chiado (Aug. 1998) down to the harbour at Terreiro do Paço and further to Sta. Apolónia railway station (2008).
Green Line - Linha da Caravela (Caravel line) (9km - 13 stations) is the name of the remaining eastern branch split from the Gaivota line. It runs from Campo Grande via Alameda, Rossio, Baixa-Chiado to the Cais do Sodré railway station (April 1998) by the harbour. An extension from Campo Grande to Telheiras (1 station) was taken into service in Nov. 2002. Additional stations had been planned in the past, but not built: Madrid between Areeiro and Roma, and Calvanas between Alvalade and Campo Grande. Later this line is planned to be extended towards Pontinha.
Yellow Line - Linha do Girassol (Sunflower Line) (11km - 13 stations) was extended from Rotunda to Rato in Dec. 1997. In 1999 construction work started on a northern extension to Odivelas. This 5km extension opened on 27 March 2004, almost doubling the Yellow Line's length. The new stretch runs in tunnel between Campo Grande and Senhor Roubado and then on a bridge to Odivelas across a large valley in this area.
Red Line - Linha do Oriente (Eastern line) (11.3 km - 12 stations) was a completely new line serving the Expo98 area at Oriente when it opened on 19 May 1998. Initially starting at Alameda on the Green line it was extended to Săo Sebastiăo in 2009, now providing transfer to all other metro lines. The Red Line eventually reached the Airport in July 2012 (3.3 km).

More from developer
MOVE-ME is a prototype of an application that allows mobile access to global and diversified information about public transports available in Oporto city.
Fully new in Portugal, MOVE-ME shares to the final user wide and spread information concerning several operators of public transports and allows planning our routes in real time with features like intermodality and real time.
Nevertheless, the system allows finding the next departures, consulting the waiting times and destinations that are associated to next vehicles of a place chosen by the user.
An integration of maps enables the user to define a localization providing information such as:
• What are the nearest stops?
• What are the nearest points of interest?
• When is the next vehicle to pass in this stop?
The route finder helps the user to find the best route to a specific place. The places can be bus stops, metro and train stations, points of interest and GPS localizations. The solutions given take into consideration the real time vehicle positions and return the best option for that moment. The system informs the passing time for each stop, the local place to change and walking route between them.
