Guwen Guanzhi (古文觀止) is an anthology of classical Chinese prose compiled by Wu Chucai and Wu Diaohou, an uncle and his nephew, during the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. The title, which means "the ultimate refinement, beyond which there is nothing more to add," signifies that reading these texts is sufficient, leaving no need to seek others. The collection comprises twelve volumes, containing 222 pieces, spanning from the Zuo Zhuan (左傳) to the Ming dynasty, covering pre-Qin philosophers, historical records, the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song, and renowned works from the Ming and Qing periods. It is one of the most widely circulated anthologies of classical Chinese prose.

The selection criteria emphasize ideological correctness, literary elegance, and suitability for recitation. Famous pieces include Cao Gui's Discourse on War (曹劌論戰), The Memorial to the Throne on Sending Forth the Troops (出師表), The Story of Peach Blossom Spring (桃花源記), Record of Yueyang Tower (嶽陽樓記), The Old Toper's Pavilion (醉翁亭記), The First Ode to the Red Cliff (前赤壁賦), and The Snake Catcher's Tale (捕蛇者說), which are almost all classic texts in Chinese language education. The compilers reveal the structure and writing techniques of these works through annotations, enabling readers to grasp the principles of classical prose during recitation.

As an essential textbook from elementary education to modern Chinese language instruction, Guwen Guanzhi, together with Three Hundred Tang Poems (唐詩三百首) and A Thousand Poems for a Thousand Families (千家詩), has profoundly shaped the literary cultivation of Chinese people. Its selected works span two millennia, demonstrating the evolution of classical Chinese prose from historical narratives, expositions, and memorials to travelogues, inscriptions, and short essays.
