The Art of War is traditionally attributed to Sun Wu, a military strategist of the late Spring and Autumn period. It is the earliest and most complete military treatise extant in China and one of the most influential works in the history of military thought worldwide. Comprising thirteen chapters of approximately six thousand characters, the book systematically expounds on the laws of warfare, principles of strategy, and the cultivation of generalship in highly condensed language, earning it the title "Sacred Classic of Military Science."

Its core ideas can be summarized as "first ensure invincibility, then seek victory over the enemy," "know yourself and know your enemy," and "subdue the enemy without fighting." Sunzi emphasizes that war is a matter of vital importance to the state and must be carefully assessed in terms of advantages and disadvantages. He advocates analyzing the battlefield through concepts such as strategy, terrain, the void and the solid, and the orthodox and the unorthodox, opposing reckless advance and protracted attrition. The work not only discusses military affairs but also contains profound philosophical and managerial wisdom, offering insights for politics, business, and competitive strategy studies.

The Art of War was already widely circulated during the Han dynasty and has since been annotated by numerous scholars, with Cao Cao's A Brief Commentary on Sunzi being one of the earliest extant commentaries. From the Tang and Song dynasties onward, its influence extended beyond China, and it has been translated into Japanese, French, English, German, and many other languages, becoming required reading at military academies and in management courses worldwide.
