About this app

There’s never been a more effective and exciting way to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet than with Interactive IPA, a unique, interactive demonstration of phonetics. By allowing you to click on any IPA symbol and instantly hear it and learn more about it, this app will expand your knowledge and comprehension of phonetics.

The app is brought to you, and voiced, by Paul Meier, a theatre professor specializing in voice, speech, accents and dialects, phonetics, heightened text, and Shakespeare; a renowned dialect coach for theatre and film; and a voice-over artist with many commercials and audio books to his credit. This has been his calling for more than 40 years, in his native London, in the United States where he is now based, and all over the world. He holds a first-class Certificate of Proficiency from the International Phonetic Association.

Among many of the famous directors with whom Meier has worked is Oscar winner Ang Lee, who says, “Paul [is] invaluable in maintaining dialect and ensuring clean, clear speech. … He has a great feel for the language, … and Paul’s contribution [to my film] through speech, voice, and dialect was crucial.”

In addition to the official IPA charts, this app presents one extra chart of Meier’s own devising: diphthongs and triphthongs of American and British English. The app is designed by Scott Means, based upon the official charts of the International Phonetics Association and an original interactive design by Eric Armstrong.

Please note that this app works best with Android versions 6.0 and newer. (Older Android versions might have difficulty displaying information and enabling page scrolling.)

Does what it says. Easy to use, and the recordings are great. I think if you really want the IPA sounds on your phone and you don't mind spending a couple bucks for it, this is the best option I've found. That being said, the UI looks fairly out-of-date, and the swiping mechanic behaves strangely. Definitely has the feeling of a side project. With a nicer, more modern interface, this would easily be worth the $4. Edit: I removed the part about the launcher icon, since that may be due to my OS.

Jasper, thanks for your review! I'm glad you like the app. Regarding the launcher icon, that's odd. The app has a unique icon that should be visible, but we have had instances (on old devices) of the generic default icon appearing instead, so I'd suggest updating your software. I hope that works. If not, the app should work fine without it.

After reading that some people had experienced problems with the app, I updated my software on my Samsung tablet. At first the app didn't work properly. Then I was promoted to update again. I then deleted and reinstalled the app and it is now working perfectly. So if you have a Samsung tablet, make sure you update the software and all your apps.

Found this via the link on the York IPA site, which has been my go-to for many years ever since I found it during my linguistics undergrad. Not sure what the previous reviewer is on about, it is absolutely interactive and has the same high quality and reliable pronounciations as the York site (which is soon to die due to the coming obsolescence of Flash). I don't even do linguistics anymore but I wanted to have access to these recordings because they are that good!!!
