‘Grove Roots’ is an exciting documentary film that traces the evolution of Ladbroke Grove in West London from the 1958 race riots to the present day. Produced by the Octavia Foundation with a team of local young people – the film explores the major milestones, historical flashpoints and social landscaping of the area to capture the unique story of Ladbroke Grove.
This is an interactive video app which brings you the informative and rewarding ‘Grove Roots’.
The Grove Roots film was produced by the Octavia Foundation, a London-based charity that works to support local communities in west and central London.
With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Grove Roots gave 8 local young people the opportunity to research and produce the film and is an example of a project which benefits the individuals involved whilst providing real value for the local community.
The film unearths the pivotal history of the area, including the rise of the Notting Hill Carnival, the fruition of 'Frestonia' and the lives of unique local figures such as Claudia Jones who is remembered in the UK as the 'mother of Notting Hill Carnival', and notorious landlord Peter Rachmann. The film features contributions from renowned screenwriter and director Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, Notting Hill), producer and director Menhaj Huda (Kidulthood) and academic, film-maker and Chair of the Institute of Race Relations, Colin Prescod.
This app brings you an opportunity to easily view this film on your phone or tablet. The film is showcased with a full ‘DVD style’ menu, which includes audio and artwork designed to give you a ‘feel’ for Ladbroke Grove and its rich culture and heritage.
There is also an opportunity to view the Octavia Foundation’s youth work show reel to gain a greater insight into the work of the charity and the lives of the young people it works with.
