Aggressive reforms in the waste management sector with guidelines for E-waste, Plastic, Solid waste & with programs like Swachh Bharat or ban on plastic items are promoting sustainable and hygienic lifestyles. Introduction of such programs is more of a necessity for our nation where each of its major cities is subjected to consumerism & generates approximately 4000MTn of waste every day.
Why is it then that the recyclers fail to fulfill their production requirement via local sourcing? Challenges like unpredictable supply, lack of pricing transparency, and an inherently unorganized multilayer supply chain plague the potency of effective utilization of valuable resources. Ultimately leading to many adverse impacts that dumping sites pose to our environment.
The waste/recyclable generators have their own set of problems. Lack of awareness, lack of efficient incentivized programs renders a majority of the recyclable material in a mixed state and hence useless. The practices of mixing waste have been prevalent for generations and require a major shift in mindset for people to consider this act of mixing as a taboo. Of the miniscule percentage that segregates, many are not exposed to appropriate channels leading to the recycler.
Technology will play a pivotal role in gelling these two extreme & isolated pieces of the recycling paradigm. The growth of mobile and internet penetration in India enables a cloud-based tech platform like Recykal to build mass awareness about segregation and promote incentivized programs at both B2B and consumer level. These awareness programs help build a reliable supply.
The next piece of the Recykal’s solution to this problem lies its utilization of technology to organize and formalize the recyclable material’s supply chain between various the sources of generation & the recyclers. The transparent pricing and traceability of material on the platforms ensures that the recyclable generator gets maximum value and an assurance of responsible disposal. This motivation is critical to ensure continues segregation.
A reliable supply build through this mechanism helps recyclers plan their plan their operations. Gives them complete visibility on the availability of raw materials allowing them to offer better pricing which in turn further incentivizes the supply side and build a potent sustainable circular economy.
