Good for guys supporting their partners through child birth We ended up having a caesarian section however this was a great resource.
I used it in the birth of my son 3 years ago. It worked! I had been getting acupuncture through our hospital for pubic symphisis pain, with extraordinary pain relief. Debra Betts happened to do one of the sessions for me and recommended acupressure. I was definitely not a "natural only" mum, I was of the "whatever gets me through the labour safely, and sanely", so I was sceptical, but because acupuncture unexpectedly took away 99% of my pain each week, for nearly the whole week, over about 8 weeks, I thought I would try it. It's a series of simple, but specific actions - the key was to practice daily, BEFORE birth, to understand how to do it effectively. It was a great way to help my husband and I feel a lot more confident and in tune before the birth. We started using it from the moment my waters broke, even before contractions. I found the closeness and support really helpful and the acupressure really did help dull the intensity I felt. I used a birthing pool, and then tried gas and ended up having an epidural. However prior to trying gas (which was out of curiosity really), I was managing unexpectedly well. As soon as I tried the gas, which was about 20 hours into labour, the next contraction wasn't necessarily worse, but I lost the focus and steadiness and rhythm we'd had, so I then felt dependent on the gas and then scared of the next contractions and therefore scared to stop gas. I had an altogether good birth, but I regret making a random spur of the moment decision to "try" gas, because although i had pain relief and then an epidural which I don't really regret, using acupressure had helped me feel so empowered, and gas and epidural changed the experience overall I think - I look forward to trying acupressure again next time, but won't beat myself up if I need other interventions either. Thought this may encourage others considering acupressure, that it's worth the time and energy. We spent about 2 weeks prepping, 10 mins a couple times each week.
Fantastic resource for women.
