A novena is a given prayer that is prayed for 9 consecutive days. A complete indulgence is granted to those believers in Christ who reverently take part in a public prayer novena.
Christians have been praying novenas since the earliest times. The term "novena" comes from the New Testament, when Mary and the apostles remained together in prayer for nine days after the ascension of Jesus, waiting for the promised Holy Spirit to fill them on the "day of Pentecost" (Acts 2: 1). Since then, it has become a custom in the tradition of the Church to pray novenas.
