Sera Jey Monastic Institute was founded by Kunkhyen Lodro Rinchen Senge, one of the main disciple of Lama Tsong Khapa, in early 15th century, when he left Drepung monastic institute with a group of over hundred followers. The name Jey was given as monks from all regions of Tibet come to study & practice at this monastery. The excellent writings & works of Lama Tsong Khapa & and his scholar Jetsunpa are studied at Sera Jey. Many of Ganden throne holders and the abbots of the two Geluk tantra monastics and other monasteries were scholars of Sera Jey. Besides, Sera Jey scholars have served in prominent responsibility capacities in the governance of Tibet and many renowned scholars and outstanding personalities have been known in the history of Sera Jey Monastery and in the land of Tibet.
