A zoo (short for zoological park or zoological garden, and also called a menagerie) is a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures, displayed to the public, and in which they may also be bred.
The term zoological garden refers to zoology, the study of animals, a term deriving from the Greek zōon (ζῷον, "animal") and lógos (λóγος, "study"). The abbreviation "zoo" was first used of the London Zoological Gardens, which opened for scientific study in 1828 and to the public in 1847. The number of major animal collections open to the public around the world now exceeds 1,000, around 80 percent of them in cities.
However, keeping animals in zoos raises concerns for animal rights.
Zoos typically house more wild animals than domesticated ones.
London Zoo, which opened in 1828, first called itself a menagerie or "zoological garden," which is short for "Gardens and Menagerie of the Zoological Society of London." The abbreviation "zoo" first appeared in print in the UK around 1847, when it was used for the Clifton Zoo, but it was not until some 20 years later that the shortened form became popular in the song "Walking in the Zoo on Sunday" by music-hall artist Alfred Vance. The term "zoological park" was used for more expansive facilities in Washington, D.C., and the Bronx in New York, which opened in 1891 and 1899 respectively.
Relatively new terms for zoos coined in the late 20th century are "conservation park" or "biopark". Adopting a new name is a strategy used by some zoo professionals to distance their institutions from the stereotypical and nowadays criticized zoo concept of the 19th century. The term "biopark" was first coined and developed by the National Zoo in Washington D.C. in the late 1980s. In 1993, the New York Zoological Society changed its name to the Wildlife Conservation Society and rebranded the zoos under its jurisdiction as "wildlife conservation parks."
The predecessor of the zoological garden is the menagerie, which has a long history from the ancient world to modern times. The oldest known zoological collection was revealed during excavations at Hierakonpolis, Egypt in 2009, of a ca. 3500 B.C. menagerie. The exotic animals included hippos, hartebeest, elephants, baboons and wildcats. King Ashur-bel-kala of the Middle Assyrian Empire created Zoological and Botanical Gardens in the 11th Century BC. In the 2nd century BCE, the Chinese Empress Tanki had a "house of deer" built, and King Wen of Zhou kept a 1,500-acre (6.1 km2) zoo called Ling-Yu, or the Garden of Intelligence. Other well-known collectors of animals included King Solomon of the Kingdom of Israel and Judah, queen Semiramis and king Ashurbanipal of Assyria, and King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia. By the 4th century BCE, zoos existed in most of the Greek city states.

On the other hand, if the idea of loading up a friend's photo, assigning them an onscreen MeowMeowBeenz level (complete with meow-meow sounds) then turning your phone around and saying something like, "Ha! I've given you the same level as Abed!" You'd probably get one of those priceless moments where your friend looks at your phone, then back at you, and wonders, "What just happened? I'm a THREE???"
It'd be one of those silly only-do-it-once kind of funny moments. And that would be it.
If that sounds like fun, and might bring a smile or two, then download away!
I have no official connection with the show (but certainly wouldn't turn down the chance to be a quirky walk-on... but who wouldn't, right?)
** MeowMeowBeenz **
Found in this current version is the ability to choose from several characters of the show. In no particular order (unless alphabetical counts): Abed, Annie, Britta, Jeff, Pierce, Senor Chang, Shirley and Troy. Cycle up and down through the characters by tapping either of the small red and blue cats on the sides of the screen.
Want to add yourself? A friend? Tap the main graphic once for camera. Press and hold to get to your device's gallery.A custom name can also be entered at the top, just type the area with the flashing cursor.
Ready to bestow the beenz? Tap one of the five cats along the bottom. The rating should change appropriately. I've been having fun taking screenshots and texting them to friends (They're all 5's, of course.) (My Galaxy S3 can produce a screenshot by holding down the main and power buttons simultaneously. Your mileage may differ.)
Have fun, and see you at Community! :)
Q: What episode/show of Community did MeowMeowBeans, uhhh, MeowMeowBeenz show up?
A: Season 5, Episode 8 "App Development and Condiments" - March 6, 2014
Q: Does the MeowMeowBeenz App actually transmit data/rankings/ratings to the Community College Servers?
A: No data is transferred from the app, nor can others see how you may have rated them. This only attempts to be a fun mock-up of what was depicted on the show.
Q: Do folks listen to Britta more when there's *brown*, rather than *yellow* mustard on her face?
A: This has yet to be tested. Someone have her give me a call and I'll break out the Goulden's.
Q: How can I make my own photo (or a friend's) look super-authentic with the App?
A: Create a graphic/photo with the dimensions of 325x220 pixels. It'll size much better, especially if you're using a mobile device similar to what showed up on the show.
Q: Is there anyway to save the photo? When I change to the show's characters, my picture goes away.
A: Other than taking a screenshot from your device, there is currently not a way to save a custom MeowMeowBeenz setting. But I am still kicking around some ideas, so stay tuned.
Q: Will my MeowMeowBeenz count drop for not rating your app with 5 stars?
A: Why even take that chance. ;)
