About this app

Improve mental health, resilience and social-emotional skills.

SuperBetter is at heart a simple and transformative idea – we can use the same strengths naturally displayed in game play to confront real-life challenges, build skills, manage stress & practice self-care.

SuperBetter uses the psychology of game play in all of life. Invented by researcher & game designer Jane McGonigal, SuperBetter is backed by science. In a randomized controlled trial at University of Pennsylvania playing SuperBetter for 30 days was associated with significant improvements in mental health and resilience.

The SuperBetter app makes it simple to go for epic wins, track your gameful strengths and build your whole-person resilience - mental, social, emotional & physical. Proven results in 10 minutes a day.

I had writer's block for over a year. I read different ways to overcome it but nothing worked for me. It was really a mental block, I was holding myself back. I couldn't write much down for my novel. I've tried another app for task management, it's a great app but didn't help me. A friend from church told me about SuperBetter and I thought 'sure why not give it a try'. I used it for a few days and did the quests, power ups, and defeat bad guys. This app helped defeat my writer's block and I was able to write three pages in my notebook without self criticism. I watched the Ted Talk and I'm a gamer so that pushed me over the edge to really be diligent in using the app. It does have errors and the app crashes. This app really helped me so I can give the crashes a pass.

Interesting premise, but it needs a social function, so those of us without in-person friends/etc. can complete the games. Plus, it needs a way to hold users accountable - it's way too easy to click completed without having done the activity. I get that's detrimental to one's self, but a more guided and interactive experience could help a broader audience, children, those with poor personal habits, etc. Otherwise, this is a uniquely childish experience for those with good habits established.

The app definitely needs more development, but has lots of potential. It's not the only life gamification app out there, but it's scientifically based, which is cool. What I like is it's not so much about tasks as it is about building resilience through self-care. I really like the future booster option (basically things to accomplish that you're looking forward to in the next couple weeks). I ended up deleting it however, for me it was more of a distraction than anything else.
