Syarikat Islam (abbreviated SI), or Sarekat Islam, formerly called Sarekat Dagang Islam (abbreviated as SDI) was established on October 16, 1905 by Haji Samanhudi. SDI was the first organization born in Indonesia, at first the organization formed by Haji Samanhudi and his friends was an association of Islamic traders who opposed Dutch politics giving freedom of entry of foreign merchants to control the people's economic competition at that time. At the first SDI congress in Solo in 1906, his name was changed to Sarikat Islam. On September 10, 1912 thanks to the political and social conditions of the period HOS Tjokroaminoto went to notary B. ter Kuile in Solo to make Sarikat Islam a Legal Entity with the new SI Articles of Association, then received recognition and was approved by the Dutch Government on September 14, 1912 .
Since the 40th Majlis Tahkim in Bandung in 2015, Dr. Hamdan Zoelva, SH., MH. as General Chair of Laznah Tanfidziyah. Through the organization's highest decision, Syarikat Islam returned to its khittah as an economic missionary movement.
