The Syria Borders Tracker app is a live tool for constant up-to-date information on border crossings in Syria. The app currently supports seven border crossings in the northwest regions of Latakia, Idleb, Aleppo, and their Turkish counterparts. In the near future the area of coverage will be expanded.
BorderTracker’s interface is simple in order to provide rapid information from each of the crossings. Its use is as easy as starting the app, selecting the border from a list, and instantly having access to the most recent report on the current and historical statuses of the crossing.
Data is provided on the operators of the crossing, the ease of access for particular groups, and the roads available after the crossing. Specifics on the operators of the crossing include the organization (Free Syrian Army, Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, Turkish Officials, Regime, etc.) and which groups they are targeting for inspection. Ease of access is broken down for civilians and humanitarian aid groups discussing the extent of inspections, monitoring, and likelihood of successful crossing. Specific data on times of operation and other useful information is provided intermittently. The app is updated frequently via the web for worldwide access to detailed and concise border reports from multiple contacts in Syria.
This information will be of particular use to any organization providing aid or programming in Syria or nearby. The cost of BorderTracker is infinitesimal compared to the potential cost of unnecessary inspection, being stuck at a crossing, being taken into custody, or worse. With BorderTracker, the daily challenge for aid organizations of knowing the situation at each border will become as easy as checking Twitter.
