About this app

Between 1808 and 1865, more enslaved men, women, and children were bought and sold in New Orleans than in any other hamlet, town, or city in the United States. The New Orleans Slave Trade Marker Tour takes you on a walking tour of sites connected to the slave trade and explores the stories of individuals and families whose lives were shattered by slavery. The app-based tour provides historical overviews of slave trading sites, invites you to listen to the voices of the enslaved, and examines slavery’s centrality to the growth of the American economy.

Excellent app! This is essential information about a core part of US & New Orleans history. Where the public markers on the streets of New Orleans fall short and often still present slavery from the enslavers' point of view, this app strives to share a more complete history. Very well done!

Having grown up in New Orleans, you grow up knowing the ghosts of all the souls that passed through the city are still there. You can feel them, but they are invisible. New Orleans Slave Trade helps fill in many of the gaps in our memory. Thank you for making this app and thank the guide from the Whitney Plantation for recommending it.
