You might run into several problems when installing a watch face from the official Google Play Android app.
If you see the message "This phone isn't compatible with this app.", try opening the Play Store in a web browser, where you will be able to select your watch device for installation.

If the watch face is installed on your phone, but not on your watch, the developer provided a companion app with it to improve discoverability on the Play Store. You can safely uninstall the companion app from your phone and look for the triangle signaling a dropdown on the Install button where you can select your watch device for installation.
