About this game

Today's puzzle is the same one for everyone.

Kanaate is a daily Japanese word puzzle. You get eight tries at the 4-kana word and ten at the 5-kana one.

HOW TO PLAY

1. Type a word you think it might be, using the kana keyboard.
2. The tile colours tell you how close you are.
Green - the kana is in the word, in that exact spot
Yellow - the kana is in the word, but somewhere else
Grey - the kana is not in the word
3. Use those hints to pick your next word.

That is the whole rule. You can start playing straight away.

FOUR MODES

- Today's 4-kana - a new word every day at midnight (JST), the same for everyone
- Today's 5-kana - a second, tougher word for the day
- Practice - play as many times as you like, any time
- Archive - go back and solve past puzzles

SHARE WITHOUT SPOILING IT

Your result shares as a grid of coloured squares. It shows how many tries you took
but never reveals the word, so you can challenge a friend on the same puzzle.

YOUR RECORDS, AND EVERYONE'S

- Streak, win rate, and a breakdown of how many tries you take
- The day's solve rate, average tries, and the openers other players chose
- Solve it and you will see your rank for the day (shown only to you)

SUGGEST A WORD

Send in a word you would like to see. Accepted words become future daily puzzles.

LEARNING JAPANESE?

Kanaate speaks 21 languages.
- Romaji guides on the kana keyboard
- Type in romaji from a physical keyboard
- Each answer shows its reading, romaji, kanji, and English meaning

ALSO

- Plays offline - the day's puzzle lives on your device
- A colour scheme for players who find red and green hard to tell apart
- Dark mode
- A one-time purchase removes the ads

What’s new

- Overtime: if you miss within the limit (8 tries for 4 kana, 10 for 5), you can keep guessing until you get it. It still counts as a miss in your stats, with overtime solves counted separately
- The board is now split into two columns, so tiles and keys are bigger
- Unused ゛ ゜ marks on keys are easier to tell apart
- Result screen buttons are easier to see
