About this app

Finsternis shows you every upcoming solar and lunar eclipse — and, more importantly, whether you can actually see it from where you are.

WHAT'S COMING UP
Browse every eclipse through 2050. Each one tells you at a glance how it looks from your location: total, annular, partial, penumbral — or not visible at all, because the Sun is below your horizon or the shadow simply misses you.

SEE IT ON A 3D GLOBE
Open any eclipse to see its path drawn on a real 3D globe, and drag the time slider to watch the Moon's shadow sweep across the Earth. For a lunar eclipse you get the other half of the picture: the region where the Moon is above the horizon, drifting west as the Earth turns.

YOUR OWN TIMES
Every contact time is shown in your local time, computed for your exact spot — first contact, maximum, last contact — with how much of the Sun is covered and how high it will sit.

ANYWHERE ON EARTH
Use your current location, or search for any place, to see what the eclipse looks like from there — useful when planning a trip into the path of totality. Going away for a while? Give the location an end date and pick where you return to.

FIND IT IN THE SKY
When the moment comes, the Sky Finder uses your compass to point at exactly where the Sun or Moon will be, and tells you how far up to look.

DON'T MISS ONE
Optional reminders a day and an hour before any eclipse that is actually visible from your location.

WHY IT'S ACCURATE
Every prediction is computed on your device from NASA's public-domain data, using the standard Besselian-element method — the same maths behind NASA's own eclipse tables. Results are checked against NASA's published values.

BUILT TO WORK ANYWHERE
No account, no tracking, no ads. The globe and all the astronomy work completely offline — only searching for a place by name needs a connection. English and German, phone and tablet.
