Automatically backup your SMS, MMS and call history with a separate label in Gmail and Google Calendar.

Later you can restore the saved data (except MMS) back to the phone, especially useful when switching to a new device.

IMAP access needs to be manually enabled in Gmail, see the website and FAQ for more information. You can of course use your own IMAP server for backups, giving you full control over your data.

SMS Backup+ is a free open-source project which has been in active development since the early days of Android, completely ad and tracking-free, supported through voluntary donations.

Used to work great and it's awesome to have backed up in gmail and searchable. However, just noticed it hasn't backed up in over 2 weeks. I didn't change anything and settings show that it should be happening every few hours. Had to do it manually and there are thousands waiting. Hoping it's just a glitch. Update 2022: Sadly, this isn't what it used to be. Still works sometimes if done manually (auto never works) but often errors out midway.

This was brilliant: it added texts to Googlemail as separate label. Google changed policies now the app cant work. Error message was "enable IMAP...". Today, app says it's updated, but the error is "app tried to access sensitive info so we stopped it". Cant figure out how to allow access, so still can't use it. I'm guessing Google don't like someone offering a function that works, that they don't offer (as far as I can tell) and didn't think of. Can't find an app that does the same so far

I love having my texts and call log backed up into Gmail, not just for backup purposes, but also for quick searches even from my PC. It hasn't always been perfect, but works great for me right now. Some past difficulties were caused by Google account security settings or phone settings not letting it run in the background.
